As one of the highest-paid sports
in the world, boxing has always attracted top talent. While
traditionally a male-dominated sport, women have recently begun
making inroads into the professional boxing world. While there
have always been highly talented women boxers, the sport often
lacked opponents, making it difficult to create compelling
marquee fights. However, as more women train as boxers, that's
beginning to change. Read on to learn about some of the biggest
rivalries in women's boxing.
Why Rivalries Are Important
There's nothing quite like watching two longtime rivals face off
in the boxing ring. Like with all sports,
women's boxing history
is full of rivalries, with fans eagerly anticipating the sport's
biggest matches. These rivalries keep the game fresh, ensuring
that there's rarely a dull moment.
Katie Taylor vs. Amanda Serrano
Katie Taylor and
Amanda Serrano are two of the biggest names in women's boxing.
These rivals will face off in a much-anticipated event at
Madison Square Garden on April 30th. Their fight will be the
first time a women's boxing match has been the main event at the
historic venue.
Taylor is currently a
world class lightweight champion
and has her sights set on holding that title. She seems not to
be intimidated by the historic bout against Serrano, believing
she has what it takes to defeat the talented boxer. She's also
looking forward to future matches against her rival, especially
if their fight in Madison Square Garden is close.
While Taylor has a perfect record, having won all 20 fights in
her professional career, Serrano is a decorated boxer in her own
right. Serrano boasts a 42-1-1 career record and is also an MMA
competitor. She's most famous for winning the super-flyweight
and super-lightweight titles during her boxing career.
Over the years, there has been a lot of talk about these women
facing off in the boxing ring, but it never materialized. At
last, two of the greatest women boxers of all time will go head
to head, and fans can hardly wait.
Claressa Shields vs. Savannah
Marshall
Savannah Marshall holds the distinction of being the only woman
to ever beat Claressa Shields in the amateur ranks. The two are
now professional boxers and headed towards a middleweight
showdown that'll rock the women's boxing world. Many have called
the upcoming matchup the greatest female fight ever.
Shields has already made history as the first boxer, male or
female, to hold all four major world titles in two weight
classes. Moreover, she's never lost a fight during her
professional career. Her last loss was to Marshall over nine
years ago when she was still an amateur.
Shields' record since she went pro in 2017 has been nothing
short of impressive. She crushed nine of her first eleven
opponents, setting the stage for an extraordinary career. The
WBO middleweight title has belonged to Marshall since 2020, and
she's looking to add another title to her resume before taking
on Shields later in the year.
Terri Harper vs. Natasha Jonas
While Natasha Jonas has only competed three times since 2020,
she's still considered one of today's best woman boxers. The
Liverpool native challenged and lost to Katie Taylor in a
unanimous decision last May. However, the fight was close, and
she displayed her skills in the ring.
After her loss, she regrouped and signed a long-term contract
with BOXXER, hoping for more opportunities to compete against
top boxers. In the meantime, she's lost one match and won one
match; not much of a comeback, but there's still time.
One of her top rivals, Terri Harper, lost her title to Alycia
Baumgardner in November, and she's looking to re-establish her
dominance. Facing off against Jonas would help her fulfill her
goal in 2022. There's no fight scheduled yet, but we're hoping
to see these rivals in the ring together soon.
