(DEC 4) According to online media sources an all-female boxing
card will take place tonight. The event is taking place at the
Olive Convention Centre in Durban, Africa that is put on by
promoter Zandile Malinga from Starline Boxing Promotions.
Malinga said, “it’s very appropriate for the tournament to be
taking place within the 16 Days of Activism for No Violence
Against Women and Children and because government has named 2021
a year of tribute to trailblazer Charlotte Maxeke.”
News24.com reported in an article that the theme “underscores
the struggle for attainment and protection of women’s rights
during a time where the country is battling the devastating
Covid-19 pandemic. The tournament is backed by the KZN
Department of Sport and Recreation and the main fight features a
rematch between Sharadene Fortuin and Melissa “Honey Bee” Miller
for the South African women’s bantamweight title.”
With the main event featuring Miller vs. Fortuin, there will be
other females on the card that includes, Razel Mohamed vs.
Lillian Molala, Bathabile “Short Gun” Ziqubu vs. Nosiacwase Dube
and more. It has been reported that there will be seven female
bouts on the card.
Ziqubu who before the Covid had taken place was being a teacher
and a professional boxer. She had to make a tough decision at
that time and put boxing aside during Covid. She told the
Dailysun.co.za that boxing was her passion, but that at the time
Covid made it too difficult to juggle the two.
