(JULY 1) Kaitaia's Mea Motu
is looking to add another piece of silverware to her trophy
cabinet when she takes on Christchurch's Michaela Jenkins for
the NZPBC Super Lightweight Championship on Saturday, July 3.
The pair will meet in the main event of Peach Boxing's upcoming
fight night scheduled to take place inside Auckland's ABA
Stadium.
Motu already holds the NZPBA
lightweight title, and a second belt will further cement her
reputation as one of the most dynamic boxers to emerge on the
New Zealand scene in recent years.
"I am excited. I am so wrapped. I am glad I am going for another
NZ title," Motu said.
Motu and Jenkins recently crossed swords in a four-round clash
in May, with Motu earning the win via the judge's scorecards.
The Isaac Peach trained fighter exploded out of the blocks in
the opening round, landing several heavy shots, which would have
stopped most fighters in their tracks. However, Jenkins was able
to weather the early storm, and the pair went on to fight out an
entertaining back-and-forth contest, which brought the crowd to
its feet on multiple occasions.
"I was shocked," Motu said,
talking about the opening round.
"I was, "what the heck, how is she still standing?" I was so
surprised. That was something different and new to me, and I was
like, " Wow, ok, this is challenging."
The upcoming bout will be an eight-round affair, and Motu, is
anticipating she will be facing off against a new and improved
version of Jenkins.
"I am definitely expecting a different fighter. I always find if
they fight me again, they are only going to come back harder and
stronger. She [Jenkins] definitely has her size. I think she
will use that to her advantage.
"I give her respect. It is amazing how she just wants to fight.
She enjoys it whether she gets hurt or not. It is obvious to me
it is the passion she has for the sport. You can see that she
loves it and enjoys it."
Motu's record stands at 8-0, with four knockout victories. She
currently sits inside the top fifty in the world lightweight
rankings, and the mother of five — who only turned pro last
October — believes it will not be too long before she is
challenging for international honors at her preferred weight
class of super bantamweight.
"I feel that every fight I have, I am just getting better and
better. By next year, I want to make my mark on that world stage
and showcasing my talent and what I am good at. I love it, and I
am very passionate about it."
Motu has made no secret of her desire to take on the best the
world has to offer, but before she can do that, she knows she
will need to get past a determined and motivated Jenkins on July
3.
