(JULY 1) Canadian boxer
Mandy Bujold has won her fight to participate in next month's
Tokyo Olympics.
Bujold said Wednesday the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS)
has ruled that the qualification criteria must include an
accommodation for women who were pregnant or postpartum during
the qualification period.
"I am excited to say that my legal battle was won," Bujold, 33,
said in a statement.
"I'm pleased that the members of the [CAS] tribunal have seen
the importance in not only my case, but in setting a precedent
for the future of women's sport," Bujold said. "This decision
can give hope to young aspiring athletes around the world,
knowing that they don't have to decide between an Olympic dream
and starting a family."
The Canadian Olympic Committee (COC) said in a statement that it
strongly believes in gender equity in sport and is pleased with
the CAS decision.
"We understand that the qualification systems have been
extremely complicated and some decisions resulted in unintended
consequences," the COC said.

We are DELIGHTED to share the news that Mandy Bujold has won her case
against the IOC!! She will continue her dream of fighting again
at the Olympics for Canada in the 51kg category.
The decision by the Court of Arbitration for Sport was released
this morning. Not only has Mandy achieved her goal, but has also
helped change the new qualification criteria to include an
accommodation for women who were pregnant or postpartum during
the retroactively chosen qualification period.
This is an amazing victory for Mandy of course, but for ALL
women in sport!
We are so proud of Mandy for not giving up on her dream and
thankful for Sylvie Rodrigue and the team at Torys LLP who
helped her throughout this tough battle.
A few words from Mandy's press
conference with CBC earlier today:
"I can't for when my daughter is older and I can share this
story and tell her that you can have a family and be an
Olympian." - Mandy Bujold
"We left it all in the ring. It was one of the biggest fights of
my career, but also the fight with the most meaning." - Mandy
Bujold
When a reporter asked: What message do you have for all athletes
and in particular working mothers?:
“You can do both! This is a step in the right direction for me
and for all women in sport moving forward. You don’t have to put
your dream on hold if you want to start a family. You can do
both at the same time.” - Mandy Bujold

Looking forward to watching Mandy and the rest of team Canada at
the Olympics next month
