(APRIL 19) After being
absent from the ring for four years, Monica Tai (2 - 0 - 0 with
1 by KO) has begun training to make her professional boxing
return in mid 2021.
The women's division is certainly
thriving at the moment with boxers like Alrie Meleisea, Baby
Nansen, Karen Te Ruki Pasene, Mea Motu, Troy Garton and Ariane
Nicholson who are on top of New Zealand. With the recent success
of Mea Motu, what is next for Mea Motu? Monica trainer Chris
Martin has announced “Monica tai getting in the mix too later
this year”.
Monica Tai who has a corporate boxing background made her
professional boxing debut on 18th of March 2017 Daniel Tai vs
Junior Fa undercard on Andrew Higgins Big Bash show. Monica took
on kickboxer Wendy Talbot. Monica went on to stopping Wendy in
the 3rd round before Wendy had a tantrum in the ring believing
it was stopped early. Wendy corner person stated after the fight
that Monica deserved the win but Wendy didn’t understand the
rules of the fight, thinking that there would be a standing
eight count.
Monica Tai returned to the ring that year on Shane Cameron
televised Sky sports show when Monica took on Quinita Hati.
Apart from one closer round, Monica won the entire fight clear,
and the judges agreed giving her the Unanimous Decision win.
That was the last time we saw Monica in the ring.
So as for her return, July is a strong possibility when she will
be making her in ring return. The current plan is to have a few
warm up fights this year before taking on one of the bigger
names including NZPBA New Zealand National champion Mea Motu,
former PBCNZ New Zealand National Champion Baby Nansen or recent
pro debut Bronze medalist at commonwealth game Troy Garton.
This will certainly spice up an already existing division in the
Super Lightweight and lightweight weight classes. You can bet
that her brothers Daniel Tai, Jordan Tai and Joshua Tai will be
in her corner.
