(JAN 17) Yamileth 'Yeimi'
Mercado, the youngest world sovereign in Mexican pugilism, works
in the Cochule’s gym in Los Mochis, as part of the team of world
champions by prominent coach Alfredo Caballero who moved from
their usual camp, in Hermosillo, due to freezing temperatures.
The WBC's super- bantamweight queen recalled that the pandemic
forced the cancellation of her mandatory defense, a week after
being held last March in Chihuahua, against Zambian native
Catherine Phiri.
On September 25, in Tijuana, 'Yeimi' knocked out Irasema Rayas
in four rounds, but suffered a double nose fracture from an
accidental headbutt. This blew up the project of a big fight
against Jackie "Princess Aztec" Nava. Now she is about to have a
very active 2021 and could reappear next month in Hermosillo or
Tijuana, as she commented on the first WBC Martes de cafe of
this year.
On the possibility of a defense against Zulina 'Loba' Muñoz,
Mercado said: "For me it is a great challenge, it has a pretty
impressive record, which is 53 fights and only three losses, two
draws. She has a pretty attractive record, I don't know if she's
the opponent, but if it's ever time to face Zulina, I'm very
willing, and all because if I want to be the champion, I have to
face the best."
On the same subject, Yamileth noted that "it is a very
motivating thing to have as a rival Zulina and other high-level
and international fighters, I am willing to face whoever she has
to be, I will be champion as far as God wants. Zulina is an
interesting fighter, it would be a pretty show fight, she's a
strong fighter, and let's see what's coming for Yamileth
Mercado."
