Women's Boxing Worldwide Gained Boxing Action in the Month of August
by Sue TL Fox
August 30, 2020

In the month of August 2020, there has been an increase in women's boxing on a variety of boxing cards throughout the world.  To give a bird's eye view of the activity, we saw many high-profile fights take place that included the following.

Earlier this month on August 7th at the  Matchroom Fight Camp, in  Brentwood, Essex, United Kingdom, in what was considered one of the best boxing action fights between two elite athletics,  Terri Harper, 129¼. now 10--0-1 (5KO), of Yorkshire, United Kingdom, had a 10-round split draw with Natasha Jonas, 129, of Liverpool, Merseyside, United Kingdom.   The final scores were 94-96, 95-95, and 96-95.   Harper was defending her WBC and IBO Super Featherweight titles.

Another exciting and highly anticipated world title bout took place on August 22nd, at the Matchroom Fight Camp, in  Brentwood, Essex, United Kingdom, with the rematch between Lightweight champion Katie Taylor vs. Delfine Persoon took place without an audience due to the pandemic. Taylor won by a 10-round unanimous decision, where the fight took place at the Matchroom Fight Camp, in Brentwood.  The two were fighting for Taylor's Lightweight world title belts that included the WBC, WBA,  IBF, and WBO. Final judges scores were 96-94, 98-93, and 96-94.

Delfine Persoon said at the time that when the result was read that this time around in fighting, said stated, “Yes, this time I respect the result. For me this time, the weight was a little too much. I didn’t feel like I had enough power to hurt her this time. I tried to get my weight up but I could not hurt her this time. And if you don’t hurt her, it’s technical and she’s good at moving around. You have to hurt her otherwise she gets away. The power was not enough. I’ve got no problem with this decision and my respect she deserves." (In a later article published, Persoon felt that she won the fight).

In a post-fight interview, Katie Taylor was asked about her thoughts on the fight, and she said in regards to winning the fight and Taylor sais that she thought she won the bout, adding, "I knew it was going to be a tough battle going into this fight. It’s never going to be an easy fight against Delfine. I knew I had to dig deep at some stage during the fight but I thought I boxed a lot better than last time. I still could’ve boxed a bit more.”

In addition, we had a huge fight take place featuring Cecilia Braekhus vs. Jessica McCaskill.  Braekhus a long-time veteran in the sport put up all of her unification belts in the Welterweight division.  In what would be considered an upset, McCaskill won the fight, but not without controversial with many giving thoughts that it was either a draw, and/or Braekhus won the fight.   Looks like a rematch may be in the works!

The fight between Braekhus vs. McCaskill took place on August 15th, in the Downtown  area of Tulsa, Oklahoma, in the United States.  It was featured as the main event, with Braekhus putting up her WBC, IBO WBA, IBF titles.   The bout ended in a 10-round majority decision, in favor of McCaskill.  Final judges scores were 95-95, 94-97, and 93-97. McCaskill improved her record to 9-2-0 (3KO), and Braekhus experiencing her first defeat in the sport, is now 36-1-0 (9KO).
