(JAN 18) When amateur boxer Joscelyn
Olayo-Munoz, first found her passion for boxing was when her
stepfather began
teaching her how to defend herself. Jos was only four years old
when she first started school in fear of much bigger kids
picking on her. He decided at that time to show Joscelyn how to throw straight
punches, and a few other different punch combinations.
Low and
behold, Joscelyn fell in love with the sport. She started informal
training when she was five years old. Little by little she
began working on mitts with her stepdad in just about anywhere in the house.
When she turned just
six years old, she started training at the Dona Ana Boxing Club.
She first began sparring at the age of six, and weighed only 43
lbs.! With her natural propensity to be "bossy" in the
household and in the boxing gym, she earned her ringname and
nickname as "JOS THE BOSS!"
In 2016, at the age of eight
years old, she took on her first amateur boxing bout at the
Golden Gloves Tournament in El Paso, Texas who was hosting the
event.
At nine years old, Joscelyn was already ranked #1 in the nation,
and was ranked #1 in the nation for three years in the Pee Wee
and Bantam age division s in the 55, 60, 65, 70 and 75 lb.,
weight division.
Joscelyn has captured titles at the 2016 Desert Showdown in
Indio, California, 2016 Battle of the 505 Albuquerque, New
Mexico, 2016 UBG Breast Cancer Awareness All Female Tournament
in Dallas, TX. She is also a three-time USA Boxing Western Qualifier
Champion 2017, 2018 and 2019, three-time National Junior Olympics
Champion (2019 she was named best female bantam boxer of the
tournament), two-time USA National Champion 2017 and 2018 (2017 she
was named best female bantam boxer of the tournament and she was
the only amateur boxer in her state of New Mexico to win gold in this
tournament), and one-time USA Boxing Easter Qualifier champion.
August 2019 she competed in her 1st Beautiful Brawlers Event and
won a hard-fought battle against last year’s champion and won
the WBC Best Bantam Boxer.
In December of 2019 for the USA
Boxing Nationals, Joscelyn moved up to the Intermediate age
group and also moved up two weight classes. There she defeated the #1
seeded boxer and lost a close bout to the #2 seeded Boxer in the
finals.
This was Jos’s first loss at a National Tournament. Her
record is currently 23-3. She is motivated more than ever to
move back up the rankings and will continue to be a force to be
reckoned with in her division. Her first goal is to earn a spot
on the Junior USA TEAM when she is old enough and one day
qualify to represent the U.S. In the Olympics.
Lastly a special award that
Joscelyn received was a Proclamation in 2017 for her first win
at the Junior
Olympic Nationals. In it stated that every October 11, will be "JOS
THE BOSS" Day!
WBAN will keep boxing fans
updated ever so often on this rising star in the sport.
We appreciate the support of
these elite amateurs in the sport and just this week received
some cool photos of Joscelyn wearing the WBAN Patch on her
boxing gear. A special thank you to one of the top female
amateur boxers in the sport for the photos!
