(FEB 16) This week WBAN got
an opportunity to talk with Melissa St. Vil about her upcoming
fight with Delfine Persoon, that will be taking place March 9th,
in West-Vlaanderen, Kortrijk, Belgium, where they will be
fighting for the WBC Lightweight world title, that is currently
held by Persoon.
Fox: When you made
your pro debut in boxing, had you been in the amateurs at that
time? If you were in the amateurs, what years did you fight as
an amateur, and where did you compete? Locally or did you travel
other places to fight in the amateurs?
St. Vil: Yes, I fought as
an amateur I had 13 wins and 4 losses. I was amateur in
Brooklyn, I was training at Starrett City Boxing Club, with the
late Victor Roundtree. I made it twice to golden gloves
semi-finals.
Fox: Do you have other family members who are also
in boxing, either amateur or pro?
St. Vil: I'm the only
person in my family which boxes and what got me into boxing was
coming from a violent household.
Fox: I don't think anyone can accuse you of fighting
in your own backyard....what are you thinking when you have the
odds against you many times when entering in someone else's
domain?
St. Vil: I'm a real
fighter who does not back down from anything or anyone so when I
go to others' backyards, I with everything going into somebody
home it should not matter it's about the fight.
Fox: In a month or so you are taking on a very strong
and fierce opponent Delfine Persoon in Belgium, her home
stomping grounds---- what are your thoughts about taking such a
high-profile boxer, fighting in her country?
St. Vil: Well it won't be
the first time for me. I'm always traveling to fight so
the real question is how will she feel fighting a strong fierce
champion as like myself.
Fox: Any talk with your management to fight Katie
Taylor in the future?
St. Vil: My manager Brian
Cohen has that covered. Yes, it came up I would love
that fight because we both represent what female boxing should
be about and that is fighting the best not going out there being bullies fighting the weaker girl and there is a lot of that going
on now in women\s boxing which is sad. There are few fake champs
and then there real champions like myself Kaie, Claressa, Helen
Joseph.
Fox: I love your ring
name, "Little Miss Tyson" is that something you came up with, or
others observing that you fought that style of Mike Tyson and
kind of just inherited the ring name through time?
St. Vil: People in boxing came up
with that name for me because me and Mike Tyson has the same
tiny voice and we are both short and strong and he actually put
my first title belt on me. The WIBA it was a great moment.
Fox:
You have been fighting for 12 plus years now, how long do you
see yourself in the sport?
St. Vil: Well, I'm in
a great position now, I'm getting ready for a big title
fight now and when I win, I'll be ready for what's next
then venture off to doing voice over.
Fox:
Is there anything you would like to do in the sport, once you
are no longer fighting professionally?
St. Vil: I wanna go around and speak to
the underdog, the misunderstood the one's nobody care about
because I have been there. I can only speak about what I know and been
through. I wanna share my story to the all women and let them know
your not only. I have been there, I understand and I'm here.
I got your
back that my mission after boxing.
Fox: What kind of
advice would you give other females that may want to venture
into the sport? Some do's and Don'ts perhaps?
St. Vil: What I would tell these
young girls that want to get INTO boxing make sure you have a
team of people who love and care about you first, because
this boxing game is cold, mean, and dirty and if you don't have
protection the boxing game will rip your booty hole out.
