(OCT 31) The Irish Athletic
Boxing Association (IABA) is sending a mix of Youth and
experience in its squad for the forthcoming 10th edition of the
AIBA Women’s World Championships in New Delhi, India.
It was in New
Delhi back in 2006 that now Pro champion, Katie Taylor took the
first of five successive AIBA World Amateur titles defeating
Argentina’s Erica Annabelle Farias 31-14 under the old scoring
system in a tournament that also featured such as Eva Walstroem
(Finland), Carrie Barry & Marlen Esparza (U.S), Canada’s Mary
Spencer & Ariane Fortin, Sofya Ochigava (Russia), the host
nation’s ‘evergreen’ M-C Mary Kom and Sarita Devi Laishram and
Romania’s Steluta Duta and Sweden’s Klara Svensson.
The first
edition of the AIBA Women’s World Boxing Championships was held
in the Unites States in Scranton in 2001. New Delhi will be the
fourth-in-a-row Asian city organizing the event after
Qinhuangdao, Jeju and Kazakhstan’s capital Astana.
In this year’s
event the Irish squad have been training not only at the HPU
centre in Abbotstown, Dublin but are now, with Greece, USA,
Sweden, Great Britain and hosts Germany at the latter’s Olympic
& Paralympic Centre in Kienbaum, some 35kms from the German
capital Berlin.
It will be like
‘old times’ for the Irish boxers and coaches since also at the
camp will be former IABA Head Coach Billy Walsh now with Team
USA whilst another former IABA Coach, Wexford’s Eddie Bolger is
now one of the key men behind the scenes in Team Germany.
The teams are
at the camp ahead of the start of the World Championships in New
Delhi on November 15 and have been for the past three days.
This is the
first time that Ireland is sending a six strong squad, a nice
blend of Youth and experience since it includes not only
European & World medallist, Kelly Harrington, now following in
Taylor’s footsteps at 60kg, Michaela Walsh who has medalled at
several major international events including this year’s
Commonwealth Games in Australia and Cavan’s Ceire Smith but also
Dundalk’s Amy Broadhurst, who has won gold, silver and bronze
for club and country in Juniors, Youth and Senior championships
but also Spartacus Tullamore’s Grainne Walsh, one for the future
and so too Castlerea’s Aoife O’Rourke, a medallist at the recent
AIBA World Youth championships and for whom this will be a
‘baptism of fire’ in the senior elite ranks.
As always WBAN
and our Social Media sites will update you on the highlights of
this year’s tournament especially at the final stages and
include updates from the AIBA, its Confederations and other news
agencies thus ensuring the best coverage of the event.
