Lani Daniels Retains New Zealand Title
by Benjamin Watts
July 15, 2018

(JULY 15)   After eight rounds of boxing, Lani Daniels successfully retains the NZPBA Light Heavyweight title against Nailini Helu convincingly.

These two boxers have fought each other a few times in the amateur ranks, and both have one multiple amateur titles. Daniels on the other hand holds the pro title making this a completely different situation since the amateurs. Both boxers weighed in no problem and both looked hungrier than ever.

Throughout the bout, Helu had problems with the reach difference between the two and due to Daniels reach advantage, she manage to outbox Helu throughout the bout. One judge gave Lani Daniels all eight rounds, where two judges gave Daniels six rounds and the other two to Helu. Making Lani Daniels the winner by Unanimous decision (80 - 72, 78 - 74, 78 - 74).

It is unknown what is next for Nailini Helu, however it is rumoured that she would be part of the eight women heavyweight tournament that is happening in October for the mandatory world title position, that is Promoted by Craig Thomson in Auckland New Zealand.
As for Lani Daniels, It is believed that she will be looking to fight overseas. However Lani Daniels sister, Caroline Daniels will be in New Zealand getting ready for the heavyweight in October.

Caroline Daniels has fought Nailini Helu six times in amateurs, and would be an interesting bout if there was a pro rematch at the tournament.

On the undercard we saw the return of Mike Douglas (aka Michael Cornelius) defeating Scott Taliauli by TKO in the 4th round.

We also saw Andrei Mikhailovich defeating Daniel Maxwell by TKO in the second round. Andrei did a hilarious, "Michael Jackson He-He-He" sound during the first round, which sent the entire arena into laughter. On Andrei's every single shot he landed onto Maxwell were hard power shots, making Maxwell get knocked down at least four times in the entire bout. It is believed this could be the end of Daniel Maxwell career.
