Canadian Bantamweight Championship in Langley BC - Alisah McPhee vs. Shelly Barnett
by Mike Blair

(MAY 26) On Friday night at the Langley Events Center, in Langley BC,  Shelly "Machine Gun" Barnett faced Alisah McPhee in an eight round fight. McPhee entered the fight with a record of 4-1-1, while Barnett was 3-0-1.

Barnett has fought all four of her fights in the last year, while McPhee has not fought in the last three years. The opening round saw McPhee take charge as she threw more jabs and moved to stay away form Barnett's powerful right hand. Momentum shifted in the second as Barnett fell in to a rhythm and began to land heavy punches.

Towards the end of the second round Barnett threw a right hand that opened a cut over McPhee's left eye. Barnett continued to be more active in the next few rounds, and though McPhee did not back away, she could not muster enough offense to slow the charging Barnett.

McPhee mounted some moments of offense in the fourth and sixth rounds, but it would not be enough to counter Barnett's heavier punches. McPhee fought well in the seventh and eighth rounds as she was more active and began to throw more combinations.

McPhee outboxed Barnett in the closing rounds, but that would not counter Barnett's heavy handed punches. At the end of eight rounds the judges scored the fight 80-72; 78-74; and 77-75 all in favor of Barnett who would claim the Championship belt.
