(DEC 10) Salt Lake City, Utah - The 2017 Elite and Youth National Championships & Junior and Prep Open came to a close last night at the Salt Palace Convention Center in Salt Lake City, Utah with the crowning of 42 National Champions.

The night began with 10 exciting “undercard” bouts consisting of junior and youth matchups, which saw Angel Martinez (Rockford, Ill.) take his second Youth National Championship, as well as Miguel Santana (Tampa, Fla.) repeat as Junior National Champion.

The main event brought youth male and female boxers to showcase their talents first, highlighted by multiple members of the 2017 Youth World Championship team looking to win another national title. 2017 Youth World Champion Citlalli Ortiz (Coachella, Calif.) and bronze medalist Isamary Aquino (Universal City, Texas) can now add 2017 National Champion to their resume. World Championship teammates Aidyl Cardenas (Calexico, Calif.) and Heaven Garcia (El Monte, Calif.) both grabbed victories in their divisions.

Seven boxers from last year’s elite championships repeated as champions, including now eight-time National Champion Christina Cruz (New York, New York), Krystal Dixon (New Rochelle, N.J.), Troy Isley (Alexandria, Va.), Delante Johnson (Cleveland Heights, Ohio), Oshae Jones (Toledo, Ohio) and Danielle Perkins (Houston, Texas). The seventh repeat champion Virginia Fuchs (Kemah, Texas) concluded her very successful 2017 at a perfect 18-0 record with her unanimous decision victory in tonight’s finals.

2016 Youth National Champion Jared Anderson (Toledo, Ohio) grabbed his first elite national title in his elite championship debut following. 2016 Youth World Championship bronze medalist Richard Torrez (Tulare, Calif.) picked up his third stoppage of the tournament to win his first elite national title. Torrez’s 2016 Youth World Championship teammate, two-time World Champion Marc Castro (Fresno, Calif.) now adds Elite National Champion to his already impressive resume.

At the conclusion of the bouts four boxers were named Most Outstanding Boxers for their divisions. The four include Youth Female Sandra Tovar (Turlock, Calif.), Youth Male Angel Martinez (Rockford, Ill.), Elite Female Jajaira Gonzalez (Fountain, Colo.) and Anderson was the Elite Male winner.

This year’s National Championships closes out one of the most successful years for USA Boxing and showed the future for Team USA is bright. Tonight’s winners, along with the juniors from yesterday’s session, are all now members of the High Performance Squad, which will give them the opportunity to attend training camps at the Olympic Training Center and represent Team USA at international competitions.
