(SEPT 12) WBAN was informed
that WBA Women's Interim Bantamweight Champion Dayana "Diamante"
Cordero 'finally gets her chance' to face her rival, WBA World
Women's Bantamweight Champion Mayerlin Rivas, on November 2,
2017, in Medellin, Columbia, during the World Boxing
Association's next Annual Convention scheduled for October 28th
thru November 2nd, 2017.
Winning a World Championship has
eluded Cordero in her 6 prior attempts. Could the 7th be the one
which will make her the youngest Columbian prize fighter to win
a World Boxing Title?
Cordero, born on December 18, 1995, in Caucasia, Columbia, fell
in love with the sport at a very early age. By the time she was
7 or 8 years old she was already boxing with the local boys in
her town.
The lack of financial support in her household forced Dayana to
work but boxing was her passion and at the age of 14 she turned
pro defeating a much seasoned fighter in Maria Andrea Miranda.
Debuting professionally at the tender age of 14 (February 27,
2010), certainly makes Dayana "Diamante" Cordero a "Diamond in
the Rough."
Now 21, Cordero has already experienced world title bouts
against the likes of former world champions; Monica "La Gata"
Acosta, although inexperienced at the time (May 11, 2012) and
out of her natural weight class (Bantamweight- 118 lbs); against
Yesica Marcos (October 6, 2012), and the most memorable of these
against multiple world champion Alejandra "La Locomotora"
Oliveras (February 23, 2013), in which Cordero went the distance
despite numerous low blows by Oliveras;
Although from Columbia, Dayana
Cordero resides and trains in Panama City, Panama, under the
tutelage of former world champion Ricardo Alberto Cordova, and
managed by Alex Rambal.
WBAN Resource Team was contacted by Team Cordero who stated; "Dayana
Cordero is elated to finally get her shot at the WBA
Bantamweight title and against the current WBA World
Bantamweight champion Mayerlin Rivas who Dayana has been wanting
to compete against for years."
We asked Cordero how she feels about finally getting her shot
against Rivas and she stated; "I am excited to finally be given
the opportunity I so deserve and I want to thank the WBA for
granting this fight and, my manager Alex Rambal and Trainer
Ricardo "El Profe" Cordova for sticking by me throughout these
years. And most of all, to Mr. Alberto Gamez who has gone beyond
the call of duty to make this happen for me. I've work hard for
years and finally I can sleep well knowing I will be the next
WBA Women's World Bantamweight Champion."
"Diamante" Cordero thanked WBAN and concluded; "Nothing can deny
me this World Title. I have worked my entire life for this
moment and Mayerlin better come with all she's got because I
intend to finish this early."
WBAN is aware that Rivas has a prior commitment before her
defense against Cordero which takes place in the Capitol of
Antioquia, on September 23rd, in a non-title 8 rounder.
WBAN certainly looks forward to pre-fight developments in the
Cordero-Rivas matter as well as any and all data, reports, bios,
photos and videos associated with women's boxing.
