(JAN 16) Debuting
professionally at the tender age of 14 (February 27, 2010),
Dayana "Diamante" Cordero is certainly a "Diamond in the Rough."
Cordero, born on December 18, 1995, in Caucasia, Columbia, fell
in love with the sport at a very early age. By the time she was
7 or 8 years old she was already boxing with the local boys in
her town. The lack of financial support in her household forced
Dayana to work but boxing was her passion and at the age of 14
she turned pro defeating a much seasoned fighter in Maria Andrea
Miranda.
Now 21, Cordero has already
experienced world title bouts against the likes of former world
champions Monica "La Gata" Acosta, although inexperienced at the
time (May 11, 2012) and out of her natural weight class
(Bantamweight- 118 lbs); against Yesica Marcos (October 6,
2012), and the most memorable of these against multiple world
champion Alejandra "La Locomotora" Oliveras (February 23, 2013),
in which Cordero went the distance despite numerous low blows by
Oliveras
Although from Columbia, Dayana Cordero resides and trains in
Panama City, Panama under the tutelage of former world champion
Ricardo Alberto Cordova, and managed by Alex Rambal.
WBAN Resource Team was contacted by Team Cordero who stated; "Dayana
Cordero won the WBA World Bantamweight interim title on January
15, 2016, against Sayda Mosquera and, defended the interim title
on May 20, 2016, against Maribel Ramirez. A year has gone by and
Cordero is yet to be given the opportunity of vying for full
title against current WBA Bantamweight World Champion Mayerlin
Rivas," but that she is optimistic if getting her opportunity
soon, they added.
Team Cordero also mentioned having watched the bout between
Amanda Serrano vs Yazmin Rivas in the U.S., and said; "That was
a great fight and a goal for women's boxing." That if Mayerlin
Rivas (no relation to Yazmin Rivas) does not confirm mandatory
title defense (immediately) as per WBA Rules & Regulations which
states "a world champion MUST defend his/her title within 6
months of capturing it" (not 1 year), that they will seek to
have M. Rivas stripped immediately of her WBA World Bantamweight
title and begin negotiating to defend said title in the U.S., if
given the opportunity.
Team Cordero thanked WBAN and said they will keep us informed of
any developments.
WBAN certainly looks forward to new developments not only in the
Cordero-Rivas matter but any and all data, reports, bios, photos
and videos associated with women's boxing.
