Huge Rematch on the Horizon - October 1 in Norway: Cecilia Braekhus vs. Anne Sophie Mathis!
by Sue TL Fox
September 7, 2016

(SEPT 7) In a potentially huge and interesting rematch of two of the sports top female boxers in the world Cecilia Braekhus,   (28-0, 7 KOs), from Bergen, Norway, vs. Anne Sophie Mathis,  (27-3-1, 23 KOs), from Varangéville, Meurthe-et-Moselle, France, will have a second go at who will win in this multi-world championship.  They will be fighting October 1, 2016, at the Spektrum in Oslo, in Norway.

This week the press conference took place in anticipation of this fantastic upcoming bout.

Anne Sophie Mathis said on Facebook, "For the record, There will be no place for the match of 01 October in Oslo Breakhus / Mathis for sale because everything has been sold."  The WBA said, that the  10,000 seat capacity venue  was sold out within hours!

In a press release on the WBA website they wrote: The WBA, WBC, IBF, WBO and IBO female welterweight champion calls the bout “The Homecoming,” as in home is where the heart is, as well as “The Arctic Rumble,” as in chill or be chilled.

“I’m thrilled I finally get the opportunity to fight on Norwegian ground,” said Brækhus when she announced the fight last month. “I have been dreaming of boxing in front of my home fans in my home country since I went pro nine years ago, and I am extremely motivated for this fight.”

In their first fight, on September 22, 2012, at Arena Nord in Frederikshavn, Denmark, Brækhus decisioned Mathis after 10 rounds to retain her titles.

“Mathis was the only name big enough to top a historical night like this. This is the worlds greatest puncher versus the worlds greatest technical and tactical boxer. She is the toughest opponent I have met, and I could have gone for something easier to make this a safe homecoming. But in this sport you cannot make history by being defensive", added Braekhus.

In their first fight in September 2012

Some boxing fans who viewed the fight on their first battle in the ring, did not quite agree with the decision and then others firmly agreed that Braekhus won the bout.   Just an excerpt of comments on their first fight are the following:

"Mathis hands down won this fight. Points not close. Another s... decision in boxing."

"No way Braekhus won, if Anne did the same as running away there would have have been no fight, never have I seen Mathis going backward in any fights, rather watch her any time."

"This is such a shame any country is impartial in boxe, Braekhus is a great boxer, but here, I didn't see a real fight, and I just see Mathis win."

In one very straight-to-the-point comment, a boxing fan merely said: "Rematch!"

Well...Ask and ye shall receive---they will be fighting again on October 1, 2016 in this fantastic matchup!
