(AUG 7) On August 27, 2016,
at the Government Complex, in Lusaka, Catherine Phiri, 11-1-0
(5KO), of Lusaka, is set to defend her WBC World
Bantamweight belt against fellow South African Gibisela
Tsabalala, 9-1-1 (0KO), of Everton, KwaZulu-Natal, South
Africa.
Catherine Phiri won
the WBC World Bantamweight title at the Centro De Convenciones,
Rosarito, Mexico, on January 30, 2016, when she defeated Yazmin
Rivas when she won by a seventh round TD due to a cut that Rivas
suffered.
In February 2016,
Catherine Phiri was named our WBAN February 2016 fighter of the
month for her fantastic win over Rivas. WBAN has honored
amateur and professional female boxers since July of 1998.
Phiri began her
professional boxing career since May of 2011, fighting all of
her pro bouts in Zambia, other than in Mexico when she won the
WBC Title.
Gibisela began fighting in December of 2010, with all of
her professional bouts taking place in South Africa, and winning
the vacant WBF Super Bantamweight World title in August of 2015
when she defeated Unathi Myekeni by a majority decision.
According to the
Zambia Daily Nation, Gibisela's promoter said that
has warned Catherine to expect a tough fight because Gabisele
was coming to Zambia to grab the belt and become the second
African female boxer to win the WBC title. She is
currently the World Boxing Federation (WBF) champion and a
voluntary challenger for Catherine for the WBC title.
