The Semifinalists Are Set Following Quarterfinal Competition at the Pathway to Glory Olympic Trials Qualifier I
by Julie Goldsticker
June 25, 2015

(JUNE 25) (COLORADO SPRINGS, COLO.) - Forty-six boxers moved one step closer to an Olympic Trials berth with quarterfinal wins on Thursday at the Pathway to Glory Olympic Trials Qualifier I in Colorado Springs, Colo. All of the day's victors moved on to the semifinal round with their wins on Thursday and will need only one more victory to secure Olympic Trials berths in the 13 weight divisions.

The day began with a highly anticipated rematch between bantamweight champion Christina Cruz (New York, N.Y.) and former featherweight titlist Melissa Parker (Fort Carson, Colo.) in the flyweight quarterfinals. Parker took the win in the initial match-up between the two but Cruz avenged her earlier loss with a unanimous decision win over Parker.

The men's flyweight opened competition in the quarterfinal round and 2012 Olympic training partner and former youth champion Gilbert Renteria (Houston, Texas) kicked off his tournament with a 3-0 win over fellow Texan John Atiles (Cypress, Texas) in their quarterfinal match-up.

Charles Williams (Colorado Springs, Colo.) defeated 2015 Youth National Champion Shon Mondragon (Denver, Colo.) in an all-Colorado battle in another flyweight quarterfinal contest.

The women's middleweight division featured a second rematch between top competitors late in the early session. Former national champions and 2012 Olympic Trials participants Tika Hemingway (Brackenridge, Pa.) and Franchon Crews (Baltimore, Md.) battled for a spot in the semifinals in a hotly-contested match-up.  Hemingway pulled out a 2-1 decision over Crews to advance in tournament competition.

In the final bout of the early session, 2015 USA Boxing National Championships silver medalist Marlo Moore (Hayward, Calif.) won a unanimous decision over 2015 USA Boxing National Championships bronze medalist Elvis Garcia (Tacoma, Wash.) to move on to the semifinals.

In the bantamweight division, two former youth stars met up in a quarterfinal round bout.  2015 National Golden Gloves champion Ruben Villa (Salinas, Calif.) won a 3-0 decision over Youth Olympic Games gold medalist Shakur Stevenson (Newark, N.J.) to secure his spot in the semifinals.

Another former Golden Gloves champion took a stoppage in the quarterfinals. Middleweight Marquis Moore (Colorado Springs, Colo.) won a TKO over Christopher Thompson (Flint, Mich.) in the first round of their bout to move on to the medal round.

Former super heavyweight Cam F. Awesome (Lenexa, Kansas) made his heavyweight debut in a bout with Tristan James (Des Moines, Iowa) and Awesome took a 3-0 victory at his new weight division. Derae Crane (Colorado Springs, Colo.) won a third round TKO over Vardan Khachatrian (Los Angeles, Calif.) in an entertaining bout to close the day's quarterfinal competition.

Semifinal action will take place at noon and 6 p.m. with all the victors clinching berths in the Olympic Trials.

The Olympic Trials Qualifier I is being livestreamed in conjunction with Flo Sports for only $19.95 at https://livecoverage.flosports.tv/event/587-usa-boxing-trials-qualifier-pikes-peak-international-championships.
