(JUNE 13)  Ireland’s boxing squad will have their final training session on Sunday ahead of Tuesday’s opening bell at the inaugural European Games in the Azeri capital. Men’s boxing begins on Tuesday, followed by Women’s boxing on June 19th.

At Friday’s opening ceremony in Baku’s new National Stadium, both Team GB (Nicola Adams) and Team Ireland (Katie Taylor) were not only chosen to carry their Nation’s flag in the hour long ceremony but were also among the chosen few Elite athletes from all competing nations to act as European Games Ambassadors for event.

Taylor described it as one of the highlights of her career to date adding:

“To be representing Team Ireland is a great honour and being selected as the flag-bearer for both the European Games and Team Ireland is a truly unforgettable experience,” said the Bray orthodox, who was also Team Ireland flag-bearer at London 2012.

“Everyone is fit, healthy and well and in great spirits. We had a very good training session today and we will have another session tomorrow before the weigh-in, ” said Head Coach Billy Walsh on Saturday.

“The squad were very excited about the Opening Ceremony yesterday. Katie was magnificent leading out Team Ireland and E.O.C President Patrick Hickey gave a fantastic speech welcoming the 6000 athletes to the Games”.

So let boxing commence and here on WBAN we will be bringing you the draw following the weigh-in and then from 19th updates on the women’s boxing in Baku. For those interested in the men’s boxing you can find daily updates on AIBA.org or your own National Federation website.
