(JULY 18) The International
Boxing Association (AIBA) has confirmed the results of the
bidding for AIBA’s major competitions to be held in 2015 and
2016, as well as for the Olympic Qualifying Events for the Rio
2016 Olympic Games.
The 2014 Women’s World Championships will take place in Jeju
City, Korea in November as we previously reported, following
Canada having withdrawn.
Back in the Spring time, the AIBA confirmed that the four
women’s continental qualifying events will run alongside the
men's tournaments at the same time and same venue.
There will be 20 women's places allocated for Rio 2016 at these
four tournaments in the flyweight, lightweight and middleweight
categories.
"The International Boxing Association is delighted with its
qualification system for the Rio 2016 Olympic Games," an AIBA
spokesman told ‘insidethegames’ at the time.
"For the first time in history, the pathway will offer no less
than six different opportunities for AIBA men boxers and five
for AIBA women boxers to qualify for the competition.
"AIBA believes that this is a unique opportunity for all boxers
who dream of participating in the Olympic Games to get a fair
chance to qualify.
The top four women boxers in each weight category at the 2015
World Championships event in Astana,Kazakhstan will also make it
to Rio.
Additionally a maximum of six quota places - five men and one
woman - across all weight categories, except in men's heavy and
super heavyweight, will be reserved for the host country,
Brazil.
