Women's World Championships Set for November 13-25th in Jeju Island, KOREA
by Michael O'Neill
February 18, 2014

(FEB 18) As we predicted earlier this year , the 8th Edition of the AIBA Womens World Championships is set for Korea. The brief announcement from AIBA Headquarters in Lausanne, Switzerland read:

"The International Boxing Association (AIBA) is pleased to announce that the 2014 AIBA Women's World Championships will be organised in the city of Jeju, Korea between November 13 and November 25,in conjunction with the AIBA Congress.

The competition will be held at the Halla Gymnasium in Jeju City, the largest city on the island of Jeju".

Among those expected to compete in Jeju are Olympic Gold Medallists Nicola Adams, Katie Taylor and Claressa Shields. Whilst Adams and Shields will be looking for that elusive first World title, Taylor will be seeking a record fifth in a row with 'old foe' Sofia Ochigava likely to be her among the main challengers once more having defeated Anastasia Belyakova in Moscow last week in what was seen as a Russian Selection trial for the worlds.

As always, WBAN.com will be bringing you updates on the major 'amateur' tournaments throughout the year, up to and of course including the World championships.

Here courtesy of that excellent Polish boxing site Strefa is link to results from all of the previous AIBA Women's World Championships.

Some fascinating results from earlier years - finals - include but not restricted to :

2001: Frida Wallberg (Swe) defeated Myriam Lamare (Fra) at 63.5kg 12:10

2002: Mery Kom (India) winning at 45kg - against AeJang Song(PRK) 16:10

2002: Myriam Lamare(Fra) defeated Yasemin Ustamar (Tur) 63.5kg +26:26 (Lamare wins on countback)

2005: Mary Spencer defeats Irina Sinetskaya . 66kg 28:21

2005: Sofia Ochigava overcame Sumeyra Kaya (Tur) 23:8 (52kg)

2006: Katie Taylor defeated Erica Annabella Farias (Arg) 60kg 31:14

2008: Karolina Michalczuk (Pol) defeats Nicola Adams (Eng) 54kg 10:6

2010: Andrecia Wasson(U.S) defeated Savannah Marshall (Eng) 5;4 (69kg)

2012: Katie Taylor defeated Sofia Ochigava (Russia) 10:8 (60kg)

2012: Ren Cancan defeated Nicola Adams (51kg) 14:10

Take a look back and see all the great boxers who took part in these championships without winning a title.

If YOU took part in any of these Championships, particularly ones from earlier years, we would love to hear from you.

How has the world of 'amateur boxing' changed? How many attended the championships in those early years?

Your thoughts, if you were present, at the inaugural Championships in Scranton 2001,would be especially welcome.
