Behind the Scenes: Nicola Adams
by Bonnie Canino /
Retired World champion
October 25, 2013

(OCT 25) The last time we met was in 2010 when the British Boxing team and the USA Boxing team came in for a training camp preparing two weeks prior to the world games that were taking place in Barbados of intense two weeks competition. Both countries supported both sides during the games just a long that they were not across from each other on the other side of the ring.

Nicola Adam stayed quiet and humble standing in line for the weigh in’s each morning with her Kellogg cereal box. She was in a very large bracket, so her weigh in’s felt like an endless competition just to make it to the finals, making it to the end met facing off with the best in the world from India, Mary Kom. Having fallen short at the World' excepting the Silver Medals, but she did not fall short in the one the most important one, the Olympics where she took the Gold Medal.

Nicola Adams at the age of 31 knows she has a mark on her back being the girl to beat.

Just lately...Why was she here in the USA and not with her boxing team at the World Combat Games in Russia that were taking place the same week? Simple answer with no disrespect to the Games is that she had requested a holiday away a while back and at the time there wasn't a date set for World Combat Games.

She was granted the time and had already purchased the reservation. She was given a training schedule to follow while she is away. When Nicola gets back from her 10-day holiday she will be going back to a busy schedule and training with the team for their next upcoming tournament.
