(OCT 22, 2013)
Yesterday WBAN received an official statement from Mia "The
Knockout" St. John...She told WBAN the following: " I am
UN-retired! Now training with the Diaz Brothers in Indio,
California, gym of champion Timothy Bradley. Antonio and Joel
have done a great job with Bradley and I love their style. It's
a perfect fit!"
After receiving this "hot news" for female boxing, I spoke with
St. John to get more details as to what had happened to change
her mind about retiring from the sport.
What Made you decide to train with the Diaz Brother?
" I bought a house in Palm Springs. And after seeing Timothy
Bradley fight in Vegas I realized I wanted to be with his
trainers. I opened for both brothers early on in my career and
when they announced Bradley was from Palm Springs, I knew it was
meant to be."
Is there anyone in particular that you want to do first
getting back into the ring?
"Yes, the rubber match with Christy Martin." [Mia St.
John had first fought Martin in December of 2002, and in the
first fight---St. John lost the fight---but looked very
impressive against Martin who at the time was at the top of her
game. On August 14, 2012, St. John rematched against Martin
and in that fight, not only defeated Martin, but won the WBC
light middleweight world title.]
Are
you still pursuing things outside the ring like commentating,
etc. (any thing that you are doing) I know you are being
honored on November 9th and I will put that in this part).
"Yes,
I still have my foundation and on Dec. 7th we're honoring Sugar
Ray Leonard in Los Angeles. All proceeds go to the El Saber Es
Poder Foundation."
WBAN will keep boxing fans updated on St. John as she re-enters
into the sport determined to continue her long-boxing career in
the ring!
