Wins for  Esparza, Gladkova, Underwood, Belyakova, Marshall and Li in semi-finals of World Combat Games in St. Petersburg
by Michael O'Neill
October 22, 2013

(OCT 22)  Today was semi-finals day at the 2013 SportAccord World Combat Games in St Petersburg, where again there are but the three Olympic weights for women (51,60 and 75kg).

Olympic bronze medallist, Marlen Esparza of the United States is through to the final of the 51kg classification with a majority 2:1 decision over Bulgaria’s Stoyka Petrov.

In Thursday’s Gold medal bout, she will meet Russian titleholder, Olesya Gladkova a convincing winner 3:0 against Chinese no.2 , Hai Juan SI this afternoon.

Queen Underwood took revenge for her London 2012 defeat by GB's Natasha Jonas when she defeated the Liverpool boxer on split 2:1 decision in today's semi-final (60kg) .The Russian judge called it 40:36 in favour of Jonas, the Estonian judge made it: 40:36 for Underwood so the decisive vote was that of Algeria who called it 39:37 for Underwood who now goes through to Thursday's final where she is up against 21 years old, Russia's Anastasia Belyakova, a convincing 3:0 winner earlier this evening against Bulgarian, Svetlana Staneva.

After today’s bout, Jonas offered her congratulations not only in the ring but also via Twitter :

Always a good bout when me an @QueenUnderwood are matched she gives 100% an I have to bring my A game. This time she won, well done good luck” to which Queen responded : “@TashaJonas thanks Tasha I know I have to be on point stepping in the ring with a veteran as yourself good bout I know I will meet you again”. Queen also told her Social media followers : “"just fought a tough opponent from England, Natasha Jonas rematch from London Olympic Games... I can do better but I won...I love my team we all fought hard I love representing my country U-U-USA”.

In the 75kg, division GB’s Savannah Marshall will meet Qian Li on Thursday. Today Marshall defeated the host nation’s  Iaroslava Iakushina  3:0 in convincing fashion with all three judges voting for the Hartlepool Headland BC fighter, the current AIBA World Champion at this weight.

Marshall’s victory margin : 36:40 37:38 37:39

In the second semi-final, just ended, China’s Qian Li defeated her Ukrainian opponent, Nila Lipska 3:0 as convincingly as the judges vote 40:36 40:36 40:36 suggests. Lipska fought a gallant fight but found the experienced Chinese boxer too hot to handle on this occasion.
