Adams, Taylor and Torlopova head August AIBA world rankings - at Olympic weights
by Michael O'Neil
August 9, 2013

(AUG 9) No surprises in the latest Women’s World Rankings lists , applicable from 01 August, just issued by the AIBA from their Lausanne, Switzerland HQ.

That Olympic Gold medallist, Claressa Shields is at no. 4 is not unexpected when one considers that she was unable to compete in this year’s American Confederation Championships, due to the age limit for AIBA International competitions becoming 19-40 instead of 18-35.

Russia’s Olympic Silver medallist ,Nadezhada Torlopova remains at no.1 followed by England’s 2012 World Champion, Savannah Marshall in second spot.

No change at the top in the other Olympic weights either with England’s Nicola Adams taking top spot at 51kg and Ireland’s Olympic Gold winner , Katie Taylor still at no 1 at 60 kg, as she has been in every rankings list , for a seventh successive year.

Among other U.S boxers, Tiara Brown (57kg) and Mikaela Mayer (64kg) are both at no. 1 in their respective divisions whilst Franchon Crews (2), Raquel Miller (3) and both Marlen Esparza and Christina Cruz are no. 4 at 51kg and 54 kg respectively.

Queen Underwood, now World number 36 in the Lightweight classification , will hope to prove the charts wrong if - as is currently anticipated - she takes part in bouts with Katie Taylor,(though still to be confirmed) , either in United States or in Ireland this fall.

These ‘exhibition’ bouts if they come to pass would of course NOT count towards the Rankings and thus Underwood will have no further opportunities to improve her position in 2013.
