USA Boxing’s Future Stars Take the Spotlight at the 2013 Junior Olympic National Championships
by Julie Goldsticker
June 27, 2013

(JUNE 27) (MOBILE, ALA.) – The 42nd annual USA Boxing National Junior Olympic National Championships opened tournament action on Wednesday with two preliminary round sessions at the Arthur R. Outlaw Convention Center in Mobile, Ala.

Forty-eight preliminary round bouts in 11 weight divisions kicked off the 2013 event, which is returning to Mobile for the third straight year. Returning champion Ruben Villa (Salinas, Calif.) took the first step toward his second straight Junior Olympic title with a victory in the opening session. Villa defeated Noah Contreras (Mohabe, Ariz.) by unanimous decision to advance on to the quarterfinal round where he will face Eli Trujillo (Rawlins, Wyo.). On the opposite side of the bracket, Junior World Team Open champion Devin Haney (Las Vegas, Nev.) claimed his first victory of the event with a 3-0 win over Nikita Ababiy (Brooklyn, N.Y.) in their bantamweight contest. Haney moves on to a quarterfinal match-up with Duke Ragen (Cincinnati, Ohio).

Two more former members of Team USA earned first round victories in the opening session of action at the Arthur R. Outlaw Convention Center. Junior World Team Open champion Keoni Adric, Jr. (Haleima, Hawaii) entered the Junior Olympic National Championships fresh off a silver medal at the Victory Day Tournament in Ukraine. He enjoyed success on Wednesday as well, winning a 2-1 decision over Antonio Williams (Fort Lauderdale, Fla.). Adric will face Michael Rivera (Houston, Texas) in quarterfinal competition tomorrow.

2012 Veles Cup tournament representative Manjaro Hills, Jr. (Baker, La.) competed in one of the most entertaining bouts of the opening day in middleweight action. Hills faced off with Darion Green (St. Louis, Mo.), who is competing in Mobile alongside his twin brother, Darius, in first round action. The two traded standing eight counts in the action packed contest with Hills taking a 2-1 split division to advance to Thursday’s action. He will take on Kashif Muhammad Brown, Jr. (Washington DC) in the quarterfinal round.

WOMEN AMATEURS:  The evening session showcased the first female bouts of the tournament with two women’s flyweight bouts being contested in the night’s action. Kristy Rodriguez (Naperville, Ill.) put an early end to her bout with Monae Ward (St. Louis, Mo.), taking a TKO win to move to the semifinals where she will battle Angie Ornelas (Beaverton, Ore.).

Featherweight Michael Nelson (Mansfield, Ohio) concluded an undefeated day for his Junior World Open squad, winning a unanimous decision over Drayden Maes (Rawlins, Wyo.) in first round competition. The win moves Nelson on to a quarterfinal match-up with Garrett Rincon (Anaheim, Calif.) on Thursday.

2012 Veles Cup team member Edgar Berlanga (Brooklyn, N.Y.) competed in one of the final bouts of the first day of action in Mobile. Berlanga won a unanimous decision over Jose Burgos (Johnson City, Tenn.) in his first contest of the 2013 event to advance to tomorrow’s quarterfinal round where he will face Michaiah Soares (Kaunakakai, Hawaii).

Action will resume at the Arthur R. Outlaw Convention Center on Thursday with 57 quarterfinal bouts as the nation’s top 15 and 16-year-old boxers vie for a spot in the medal round. All of Thursday’s quarterfinal bout sheets are attached.
