(JUNE 8)
(COLORADO SPRINGS, COLO.) – Team
USA returned home today with two first place team trophies in
hand, following a dominant performance in two international
competition in Puerto Rico. The team closed the Olympic Cup with
five gold medal victories on Thursday as well as a silver medal
on the final day of their Puerto Rican visit.
Light flyweight
Leroy Davila
(New Brunswick, N.J.) set the
tone for the evening with a resounding 3-0 championship victory
over Puerto Rico’s
Harold Lopez.
During the past several weeks in Puerto Rico, Davila won gold in
both international tournaments and exemplified leadership in and
out of the ring. This is Davila’s third international medal of
2013.
Flyweight
Shawn Simpson’s
(Chicago, Ill.) extensive
international experience was evident in an action-packed bout
with 2012 Puerto Rican Olympian
Jantony Ortiz.
Simpson lost a close 2-1 decision
to claim the silver medal. It was the second face-off of Simpson
and Ortiz in just two weeks on Ortiz’s home soil, following
their championship bout in the Cheo Aponte Tournament last week.
If flyweight
Virginia Fuchs’
(Kemah, Texas) second round TKO
in the preliminaries did not make a statement, her championship
night definitely affirmed her expertise. Fuchs claimed her gold
medal early by defeating
Janet Gowitz
of Puerto Rico in a first round TKO. During her time in Puerto
Rico, Fuchs never heard the closing bell of a final round – she
impressively stopped every opponent with a TKO.
Light welterweight
Jose Alday
(Odessa, Texas) finished his
first international experience with a championship victory
against
Jose Lopez
of Puerto Rico. A newcomer to USA
Boxing’s National Team, Alday exceled in Puerto Rico and will
depart with a gold and silver medal in the two Puerto Rican
tournaments.
After an early elimination from
Cheo Aponte, middleweight
Le’Shawn Rodriquez
(Shirley, N.Y.) rebounded
strongly to claim gold on Thursday evening. Rodriquez defeated
Lucas Martins
of Brazil in a unanimous
decision.
Championship night closed on an
exciting note with super heavyweight
Cam F. Awesome
(Lenexa Kansas) winning gold over
Clayton Lavien
of the Virgin Islands. Along with Davila and Fuchs, Awesome went
undefeated in Puerto Rico with two gold medals. Awesome has
received notable attention lately for his 15-0 winning streak
since returning to boxing in February. He has captured two
national and international titles since returning to boxing
action in April.
USA Boxing International Teaching
Coach
Pedro Roque
(Colorado Springs, Colo.),
Kevin Benford
(Cincinnati, Ohio) and
Steve Rivera
(Somerset, N.J.) served as the
coaching staff in Puerto Rico with
Dr. Nicholas Piantanida
(Colorado Springs, Colo.) working
as the Team Physician. After a week-long training camp and
back-to-back competitions, Team USA returns to recuperate and
continue its strong forward momentum towards the Men’s World
Championships later this year.
