(MAY 30) Last Saturday, on May
18, 2013, Beautiful Brawlers kicked off another
series of 10:00 a.m. sparring sessions that will continue
from now until August 31st when the all-female boxing event the
Beautiful Brawlers III will take place at the Surf Spot in
Pacifica, California. 15 bouts featuring the “Best of the Best”
will once again make our show a success. Last year Beautiful
Brawlers was voted Best Amateur show of the Year and BabyFace
Boxing Best promoter of the year by CSN Bay area sports. This
year we have even a better line up. We have a Mecca of female
boxing in California and we don’t take it for granted we build
upon it.
Former World Champs and current World Champions showed up to not
only spar each and other but to have fun, talk to the
youngsters, mentor and be a part of the Beautiful Brawlers. We
do this for the girls. We do this for ourselves and we do this
for the girls in the future who want to put those gloves on and
be a student of the sweet science. When a boxer with hopes of
being a champion comes in, we take her seriously. It’s not just
about boxing, it’s a sisterhood.
We also have MMA fighters who
want to work on their hands , and have fights coming up. They
have been a great addition to our sparring because the MMA
fighters are fearless and leave it all in the ring. Kelly
Fashold makes her MMA pro debut on June 22nd, 2013 and has been
coming over to Babyface Boxing every Saturday consistently for a
month. She has been a great addition to our sparring because she
is tall and a middle weight. Kelly Faszholz and Raquel Miller,
2012 152lb USA National Boxing Champion and 2013 Nationals
Silver medalist, started off the sparring Saturday and kicked it
into full gear. Of course their sparring was very spirited with
both gals staying very busy. If I left these two women in the
gym and came back the next morning, these two would still be
going at it.
Melissa Mc Morrow, one of the Bay Area’s favorite 112 lb World
Champions came in to spar and worked with 2011 Beautiful
Brawlers champion Tatiana Almaraz who is considered by many in
our area, one of the best boxers in northern California. Melissa
actually had fought Tatiana in the amateurs twice and both have
a similar style.
Their inside game is tight and the younger
girls attentively watch and learn from the best. After sparring
each other, both Almaraz and Mc Morrow sparred youngsters
waiting in the wings to get some work in. “What I love about
Melissa is that she works with everybody and any of the girls
who want to get in there with her. Melissa is a huge role model
for them. She not only has superior skills but a huge heart.” As
the other girls spar, Melissa calls out instruction and gives
them some advice. Just what these girls need. SOLID ADVICE. Word
on the street is that she called out Eliza Olson, former
lightweight world champ. “I love Melissa, I will fighter her any
time,” Olson says as she wipes the sweat off her brow from
sparring both Miller and Faszholz. The sisterhood we have is not
comparable to any other gym. Girls come from all over California
to get sparring in. It simply the best place in northern
California to be if you want to get sparring in with women or
girls who are bad ass.
Former World Champions Martha Salazar and Gina Guidi were also
on hand and were actively coaching and working corners. This is
a group effort. When the younger girls get into the ring and
spar and leave their hands down -they are going to hear about
it. If they do not use their jab enough, they are going to hear
about it. Any flaws, we try to work on. We get the road work in,
we talk about conditioning and diet. For some of the girls we
talk about public speaking and how to represent themselves. A
lot of the girls who come into spar are getting ready for our
all female show. What better place to get ready than a gym
filled with girls and women boxers, MMA fighters and world
champions. We also have a great group of our coaches like Ed
Clemens and Eloy Ramirez who 100% support female boxing and give
us great advice and conditioning. I feel blessed that we can
offer such a place for females.
Sometimes we have our heart to heart conversations. Saturday,
Gina Guidi gave us all very sound advice that makes us think
about where we are going, what we should do to get there and how
we should do it. Simply put, we appreciate Gina Guidi for
extending that genuine love and caring and knowledge. I love my
team. I love my best friends. What we have is a true respect for
the game, for other female combat fighters, for ourselves and
for the lives we touch.
