Team USA Goes 4-0 on Day Two of Action at the 2013 Independence Cup
By Julie Goldsticker/USA Boxing

(FEB 20) (COLORADO SPRINGS, COLO.) – The United States enjoyed an impressive showing on the second day of tournament action at the 2013 Independence Cup in Santiago, Dominican Republic on Tuesday. Light welterweight Erickson Lubin (Kissimmee, Fla.) and lightweight Queen Underwood (Seattle, Wash.) each claimed victories in the afternoon session with lightweight Kenneth Sims, Jr. (Chicago, Ill.) and middleweight Raquel Miller (San Francisco, Calif.) earned wins in evening action.

Seventeen-year-old Lubin set the tone for the U.S. squad in the first bout of the day for Team USA and he did so in impressive fashion. Lubin won a 25-10 decision over Brazil’s Jhonatan Sodares in light welterweight preliminary round action. The victory moves Lubin on to Wednesday’s quarterfinal round.

2012 U.S. Olympian Underwood returned to international action in a bout with Guatemala’s Karen Ismenia Perez Revoloria on Tuesday afternoon. Underwood won the quarterfinal showdown by a 15-8 margin to move on to the semifinal round. She will compete for a spot in the tournament finals on Thursday.

Sims returned to the ring on Tuesday fresh off a tiebreaker in Monday’s action. He enjoyed a much more comfortable victory in tonight’s bout, winning a 34-12 decision over Peru’s Tyson Martinez Vera to move on to Wednesday’s quarterfinals.

Miller faced off with home nation Gisela Perez of the Dominican Republic, and she sent the Dominican fans home disappointed, taking the quarterfinal win. The 2012 Women’s World Championships silver medalist Miller won an 11-3 decision over Perez to advance to the semifinals on Thursday.

Light flyweight Leroy Davila (New Brunswick, N.J.) and flyweight Shawn Simpson (Chicago, Ill.) will make their tournament debuts on Wednesday while Sims, Lubin, and welterweight Rashidi Ellis (Lynn, Mass.) will all return to the ring in quarterfinal action as well.

Coaches Ed Rivas (San Antonio, Texas) and Jason Galarza (Orlando, Fla.) are leading the U.S. squad in to action while Dr. Robin Goodfellow (Albion, Mich.) is serving as the squad’s Team Manager and Physician. The U.S. squad is competing in the first multi-nation tournament of 2013 in the Dominican Republic following a preparatory training camp at the Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs.
