(JULY 21) Mia St John is so
confident that she will beat Christy Martin she has challenged
her rival to a winner-take-all battle when they meet in their
rematch on August 14th. Never one to shy away from a challenge,
Martin accepted and both have agreed that the winner of their
fight will leave with both sides of the purse.
"We've rivaled each other from
the very beginning," St. John said. "She was with Don King. I
was with Bob Arum. She came out on the cover of Sports
Illustrated and I came out on the cover of Playboy. Which one
would you rather see?
At the press conference held at the Downtown Club in Fresno, the
ladies squared off in what turned out to be a spirited affair.
St John, who lost a ten round unanimous decision to Martin on
Dec 6th, 2002 feels she smarter now and will beat Martin
soundly. "I'm not so sure I won the last fight, but I know I
outboxed her," said St. John. “I know I could have won if I had
gotten my confidence up a couple of rounds earlier, which I
didn’t. But now I have that confidence because I fought her
before, now I know that I can not only beat her but I believe I
can actually stop her.”
Martin welcomed the winner-take-all challenge saying she will
use the extra cash to vacation in Tahiti. “Thanks Mia. But don’t
think this will make me go easy on you. I’m still going to knock
you out.” she said.
Martin says she desperately wants her 50th win and feels the
perfect exclamation point would be a knockout against her rival,
Mia St John. “I want to thank the casino for giving me the
opportunity to knock Mia out,” Martin said. “And not just to
knock her out but to knock her out in her home state in front of
her people. And you all can count to 10 with the referee as she
lays there.”
