(APR 18) Kristen Treadway
retained the title of reigning champion, but not in the boxing
ring.
Treadway, a professional boxer, won her second consecutive 1040
Tax Fun Run 5K Saturday, beginning and finishing at the Eagle
Mountain Elementary School.
The annual event began 11 years ago and is sponsored by the
White River Roadrunner Club.
“This is one of many races that we sponsor,” president-elect
Dwayne Dickey said. “The fun run is just what it says, fun.
Promote running and have a good time.”
Treadway, a Sulphur Rock native, is well known in the area for
her athletic prowess. She helped the Sulphur Rock Lady Wildcat
basketball team earn many titles. Now, her athletic pursuits are
driven by professional boxing.
“I use these events to stay in shape,” Treadway said, “I run
nearly every day, but these events are fun to compete in.”
Treadway said she plans to run in a half-marathon, the “Boring
as Crap Half-Marathon, in Moorefield on Saturday.
Only three years into her boxing career, Treadway has a record
of five wins and one draw in the super flyweight division. Her
next fight is scheduled for May 19 in Fort Smith.
Not one to focus on her time, her mark of 19:55.54 was the best
she has ever run. It eclipsed her time of 20:29.54 in last
year’s winning race.
Among the women, Crystal Cossey followed in second with a time
of 23:05.21. Ann Diemer took third in 24:09.92.
In the men’s division, 15-year-old Tyler Webb beat defeated Will
Henry with a time of 19:11.78. Henry followed with 19:28.33.
Webb is from Mount Pleasant and a freshman on the track and
field and cross country teams for Melbourne High School. This is
the second WRR event he has won. He won the Penguin run last
year.
“It was a good race, but not my best time,” Webb said.
His best is 18:18.
Henry, not accustomed to second, has won the most recent Penguin
Run and Band on the Run 5K’s this season.
Shannon Box took third place with a time of 19:31.39.
In the walkers division, Angie McGee from Newport took first for
the female racers with a time of 42:57.49, and Randall Horton of
Stuttgart won the men’s division with a time of 38:24.43.
