(MAR 31) Ledyard, CT --For
a relative newcomer, featherweight Shelito “Shelly”
Vincent proved to be more than comfortable under the bright
lights and high profile often chaos that follows the ESPN2
“Friday Night Fights” caravan.
Vincent, making just her second outing as a professional earned
a 40-36, four round, unanimous decision over Karen Dulin on the
under card of last night’s edition of the popular series at
Foxwoods Resort Casino. The aptly named “All In” card was
promoted by Classic Entertainment and Sports (CES).
Vincent upped her slate to 2-0, while Dulin, dropped to 2-11, 1
KO with the loss. Vincent, who hails from New London, Conn, and
currently fights out of Providence, Rhode Island had the added
benefit of familiarity going into the bout as both combatants
traded shots in Vincent’s debut last October. In that scrap
Vincent registered a 40-36, 39-37, 39-37 decision.
Vincent who entered at 124 this time out was gracious and
matter-of-fact in chatting about her decision to provide the 36
yr. old Dulin another look. “She asked for it (rematch) and I
thought why not,” said Vincent who had finished of Dulin while
the cable network’s on-air talent were still in the midst of
prepping for their broadcast behind the scenes.
“I thought tonight was good,’ said Vincent of the positive
result. “I always think I can do better. I fought her in my
debut and I think I was better this time but I’m still thinking
I should have got her out of there earlier. It felt like she
threw more punches than the last time and applied little more
pressure this time. She’s a fighter, I’ll give her credit for
that.”
Last night’s victor was admittedly not as busy as she would have
liked until late. “ I wish I had done a more of that,’ Vincent
said after an animated fourth in which she clearly controlled.
“I felt like I won all of them (rounds), but I should have
dropped in some more punches. I felt like I could afford to.”
“I’m more of a counter puncher and I trying to pick up my
punches. Pete is working on that and we’re going to change that
for the better,” said Vincent looking ahead to her work with
trainer Peter Manfredo.
“I’ll fight whoever, “ Vincent said, “That’s what I signed up
for.” In the bouts making the live television slot, Hank Lundy
(22-1-1, 11 KO’s) retained his NABF Lightweight title with a 10
round unanimous decision (97-92, 97-92, 98-91) over St. Louis’s
Dannie Williams (21-2, 17 KO’s). “I jumped off my game plan
trying to knock him out,’ said Williams in post fight analysis.
“No excuses- I’ll be back”
New Haven’s (CT) Elvin Ayala kept the WBC/USNBC Middleweight
crown he
currently holds with a unanimous decision over Eric Mitchell of
Philadelphia, PA.
