(OCT 23) Eileen Olszewski gained
an unanimous six round decision over Suzannah Warner at the
Capitale Club in lower Manhattan, on Friday night, in the
featured bout on Joe DeGuardia's Star Boxing six bout card. The
decision was met with surprise and derision from some in the
raucous crowd packed into the high ceilinged, pillared venue
which, in days gone by, housed a branch of the Bowery Savings
Bank and now has a "night job" as a popular nightclub.
The judges cards read 59-55,
58-56 (2x) for Olszewski who was returning to the ring after a
nearly two year hiatus. A call of five rounds to one round
(59-55) against Suzannah Warner, in a bout this competitive, is
not only cause for considerable derision, but, in certain
circles could, possibly, be grounds for impeachment. The scores
were read before the winner was announced and when Olszewski was
declared the victor, her sizable contingent, close to ringside,
erupted in joy, while many others in the crowd seemed to lapse
into stunned bafflement. A boxing official sitting next to me in
press row suggested, "Maybe they got it turned around."
It was a fast paced bout between
two very good female fighters. Olszewski had a pound and a half
weight advantage (109-107.5) and both fighters went bell/bell
with quick ring movement for all six rounds. Each fighter took a
turn being the aggressor throughout the bout and each round was
closely fought, save the fourth which was Warner's biggest round
of the bout. Olszewski closed fast in each round, which could
have been a factor in the judging. Warner found a home for her
left hook throughout the bout, while Olszewski countered
effectively with straight punches with both hands.
This was a return bout for the two New York fighters, Olszewski
winning an unanimous decision in the Bronx in August 2007.
Olszewski, with the decision, goes to 6-2-2, Warner drops to
9-10-1. Bernie McCoy
