– The visiting squad won a slim one bout victory over the United
States on Friday night in New York City, with China claiming
seven wins to six by the home team on Empires Collide, the USA
vs. China Duel. The two nations faced off in international
action at Capitale in New York’s Chinatown, battling in 11 bouts
of international action.
After losses in the first two bouts, Team USA enjoyed a three
bout winning streak with lightweights Patricia Manuel (Commerce,
Calif.) and Eric Flores (Ingle, Calif.) and light welterweight
Michael Reed (Waldorf, Md.) all enjoying international wins. The
two United States middleweights enjoyed success as well as
Alyssa DeFazio (Phoenix, Ariz.) pulled out a tiebreaker victory
over 2010 World Championships silver medalist Jinzi Li in the
American boxer’s international debut and Jesse Hart
(Philadelphia, Pa.) winning a 15-7 decision over Jianting Zhang.
The two Chinese Olympic medalists closed the event with
victories for the visiting nation as 2008 Olympic Champion Zou
Shiming won a 15-2 decision over Santos Vasquez (Sun Valley,
Nev.) and 2008 Olympic silver medalist Zhilei Zhang claimed a
16-8 victory over Danny Kelly (Washington DC).
The U.S. team enjoyed a pre-event pep talk from 1984 Olympic
bronze medalist and former professional heavyweight world
champion Evander Holyfield before taking the ring for the
customary pre-event festivities. Holyfield’s Olympic teammate
and 1984 Olympic Champion and New York native Mark Breland
joined the U.S. squad at Capitale as well.
Several of the U.S. boxers will now travel to San Antonio for
the 2010 National PAL Championships, which will begin
competition on Monday.
