(SEPT 12) When Molly McConnell
first entered the gym in 1999 she really had no idea the journey
her life would take or the sacrifices she would endure in the
name of women’s boxing. When the boxing bug bit Molly it sank
its teeth in so deep that it would never let loose. In a year
that brought out the most famous daughters in the fight game
such as Laila Ali, Jackie Frazier and Freeda Foreman, Molly had
just entered the arena.
Struggling to master the sport,
she paid close attention to those that would instruct her,
absorbing every vital detail. Her jack hammer jab, precision
like skill and natural ability for boxing fueled her desire to
be a champion….and a champion she became. In the world of
amateur boxing Molly garnished win after win competing in the
National arena. Making Oregon proud, Molly won the 2002 Women’s
National Golden Gloves, bringing home Oregon’s first winning
medal in 18 years.
Winning amateur events was only the flint that sparked the fire
filled passion within Molly to become a World Champion. Molly
became a professional fighter. With a quest to climb a mountain
of personal achievement, she had a dream to secure a world
title.
What Molly didn’t know or understand when she took this road,
was the opposition she would face….the real fight, the fight of
her boxing life. Her fight, trying endlessly to have a promoter
put her on a fight card. This has not been a struggle Molly has
undertaken alone. All women in boxing have run head first into
this obstacle. The promoter that will put you on their card
based on your skill and not your sex appeal are few and far
between.
The good news is…..Molly has found that promoter. Not only will
it be the main event, it will be 10 round World Title Fight for
the WIBF and GBU Jr Welterweight belts.
Joseph A. Cintron of Cintron-Fizer-Shocks Promotions says “Molly
has earned this opportunity and I am proud to be the one to
bring it to you. Women have a place in boxing right along side
the men. My intention is to make that happen.”
So, on September 25th, 2010, at The Soccer Center in Tacoma,
Washington, Molly will enter the ring with one thing on her
mind…..to realize the dream she has chased on every run, every
day for 11 years. The stubborn, fiery Irish fighter that never
gave up on her dream will no doubt pour her heart into this one.
