(APR 6) The Amateur Boxing Association of the Philippines (ABAP) is now looking for female boxers who can represent the country in the lightweight and middleweight divisions in the 2010 Guangzhou Asian Games.

The Guangzhou Asian Games Organizing Committee (GAGOC) decided to include three more weight classes – including the flyweight division – in the 16th Asiad, which is slated from November 12 to 27 at the capital of China’s Guangdong province.

"Our strength is in the lower divisions. But we are looking for talents who can fill the lightweight and middleweight divisions. Once we selected the athlete, we will fast track their preparation for the Asian Games," said Picson.

Except for flyweight, where Asian Indoor Games champion Annie Albania is the top bet, ABAP has no boxer in its pool to field in the heavier weight categories.

Picson, however, assured that ABAP will exhaust all ways to remedy the situation.

Women’s boxing will be making its debut in the Guangzhou Asian Games where the Philippines is hoping to improve its four gold medal harvest in the 2006 Doha Asiad. – Copyrighted Story on GMANews.TV
