(JULY 17) WBAN received a newsletter
this week from Julia Feighner who operates a very "cool" boxing gym
in Austin, Texas. Feighner offers a fun and effective workout in a
safe, all-women environment. She recently interviewed a couple of
her members in her gym that WBAN would like to share with boxing
fans.
Why did you join ABB?
I had tried various gyms,
personal trainers, and weight loss programs without ever finding
anything that was fun enough to stick with. Then I saw a news
story on TV about Julia. She seemed passionate about what she
was doing, and was encouraging to the people she was working
with. Since I don't like to work out alone and hate static
exercises, I decided to give it a try.
How has the program changed you?
By then end of that first session, I was hooked. Boxing is a fun
and strenuous work out and I feel like I'm learning something
new at every session. I'm already in better shape than I was
when I was young. And, in Julia, I have found somebody to work
with who I feel is on my side. I'm having fun, and that's not
something I've ever said about a workout.
Favorite part of the program?
My favorite part of the program is anything I do with the gloves
on. When I'm working on a boxing goal, I don't even notice the
physical effort.
Is your age a factor?
There are definitely things I can't do now that I did when I was
"young." I have to be especially careful with my knees. On the
other hand, I would say I am actually physically stronger since
I've started boxing than I've ever been.
Why did you join ABB?
I became interested in ABB because i thought it would be a great
way to relieve stress, and I ended up loving to punch stuff. (I
was right!) But, the reason that got me to come instead of just
going to a gym is the fact that there are no guys working out
with us and that the trainer is a woman.
How has the program changed you?
I feel better about myself because I feel like I have really
taken control of my life. It is really great to be able to do
something fun with a group of friends that you can really have a
great time with.
Favorite part of the program?
My favorite parts of the training are when we are doing
freestyle on the bags, the double-ended or speed bag and partner
drills.
Is your age a factor?
I don't feel like my age affects my ability to do the program at
all. Although, sometimes Julia calls me (endearingly) the
"baby."
