(JUNE 3) If there was ever someone to
have as a companion in a dark alley, Laura "Lady Ram" Ramsey, would
be a strong candidate for the position states Andrea Cruz, staff
writer for “Her Voice Magazine”.
Ramsey, a professional middleweight division boxer and a 39 year-old
proud grandmother, has a goal to become one of the most respected
women in the ring. A resident of Auburndale, Florida and ten-year
employee of Avon Park Youth Academy, Ramsey will be taking on
undefeated 33 year-old Natascha Ragosina of Magdeburg, Germany for
the Women’s International Boxing Federation (WIBF), World Boxing
Council (WBC), and World Boxing Association (WBA) super middleweight
world title belts in Hannover, Germany on July 3rd.
Balancing responsibilities as Dean of Students, gym owner/manager,
amateur coach, professional fighter, mother, and grandmother she
excels in everything she does. Hard work, dedication, and
persistence have all helped her turn her career around after two
back to back losses. She has already avenged one knocking her
opponent through the topes in the process.
In her last 4 fights that
comprised 12 rounds, Ramsey’s opponents have hit the canvas 9
times. Since her last defeat she has notched three straight
knockout wins, a unanimous decision win, and won the Global
Boxing Union (GBU) Middleweight (160 pounds) World Title belt
she still possess by defeating Kenya's Conjestina Achieng.
"Lady Ram" has been fortunate to travel the globe and display
her boxing skills.
To date she has fought in
Bermuda, Guyana (South America), Edmonton (Canada), Kenya
(Africa), Shanghai (China), and throughout the United States.
Her intentions are to make a lasting impressions in the hearts
of Germany’s boxing fans, but more importantly, in the eyes of
her fellow Americans.
At the Beachside Brawl in Mombasa, Kenya Ramsey, who took the
fight on 5 days notice, shocked many Kenyan fans as they saw
their own Conjestina Achieng hit the canvas for the first time
in her four-year boxing career, stated Kenyan boxing
representative, Edward Sande. With the fight scheduled for 10
rounds, Ramsey managed to floor Achieng four times over 6 rounds
before it was evident Achieng was hurt and leaning against the
ropes. When she took the count she was still wobbling and many
of the fans agreed with the referee’s decision to stop the
fight.
The results of the bout, however, may not have surprised those
who knew that Ramsey, two weeks prior, demolished the #1 light
heavyweight contender Nigerian Ijeoma "The Praise" Egbunine of
Marietta, Georgia with 3 knockdowns in the first round. This
fight was on the Don King Productions undercard Jan. 6, 2007,
which was held at the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in Hollywood,
Florida alongside of Samuel Peter and James Toney.
Due to her determination and commitment, boxing analysts felt
that 2007 was the beginning of an incredible career for Ramsey.
But since then, she has only stepped into the ring twice. One
being in China in 2007 against Yanan Wang, while the other on
the high-profile Antonio Tarver versus Clinton Woods undercard,
held April 12, 2008 at the St. Pete Times Forum in Tampa. At 168
¾ pounds, "Lady Ram" won a four-round unanimous decision over
Alexandra Malloy (163 ¼ pounds). Ramon Aranda of 411mania.com
reported, "Ramsey scored a lopsided four round decision over
fellow super middleweight Germany's Alexandra Malloy. Ramsey
pounded her opponent throughout the bout, even scoring a
knockdown with a brutal right-cross in the final round of the
four rounder. "Lady Ram" improved her record to 9-3-0 (4 KOs)
with this win.
A native of Lake Wales, Florida Ramsey trained from 1996 until
2002, at which time she had her first contest as an amateur
boxer. She even sparred with Andre Berto, a well-known fighter
from Winter Haven, who represented Haiti in the 2004 Summer
Olympics and who recently won against Juan Urango on HBO.
In 2003, Ramsey racked up a record of nine wins and no losses in
the United States. That same year she fought in three
international fights. In a Russian dual-match her first bout
ended in a draw while the second was lost on points against, the
same, Natascha Ragosina. Shortly afterwards, Ramsey traveled to
Sweden and suffered another loss.
Ramsey, who trains at her new facility located in Auburndale’s
flea market, would like to be a boxing promoter one day. For
now, her efforts are turning towards managing professional
boxers. With her degree in Organizational Management and all of
her experience in boxing, she is confident that this transition
will be a smooth one.
Currently, there's a growing interest of potential pro boxers
who trust her management skills and are demanding that she
handles their career. Upon retuning from Germany Ramsey plans to
begin the management company right away. She has several
prospects in her stable that have developed work ethics similar
to hers. She feels with the strategic planning and movement they
will be some of the most recognized fighters in Florida.
Ramsey, who is known to some as the "baddest grandma on the
planet," has three grandsons by her daughter, Alysia. Ramsey
hopes she will follow in her foot steps by competing in amateur
and pro boxing. Alysia was 9 when Ramsey began in boxing and has
become her trainer and sparring partner on days when no one else
is available.
Some say that "Lady Ram" is the hardest hitting boxer in the
history of female boxing. Her explosive blows are enough to
cause top contenders to shy away from stepping into the ring
with her. She is driven and determined to return to the United
States with an accumulation of 4 belts, crowning her the new
super middleweight champion of women boxing.
Be on the look out as Lady Ram plunges into Mixed Martial Arts
(MMA) with her pro debut. One of her knockouts came at the
vulnerable Erin Toughill, aka “Steel” on the American
Gladiators, who has since retired from boxing. With these skills
to maneuver into various pro-level sports, there’s no confusion
why she is dubbed the “Baddest grandma on the Planet”.
