(DEC 9) I am almost always amazed on how
many fights that are turned down by professional female boxers
in the sport. We will see promoters offer very reasonable
purses, and yet, a boxer who may not have fought more than once
or twice in the year---turns a fight down.
At the same time, I am contacted by women boxers
who say they cannot find a fight and that they want a fight.
What some do not know, is that WBAN is already aware of the fact
that that particular boxer WAS offered fights and merely
turned them down. It is absolutely mind-boggling at times.
WBAN has posted many potential fights for boxers, and yet many
times there is not one boxer who will step up and take a fight
that has been offered up by a promoter.
I honestly do NOT understand why some of these women are in the
sport if they are so unwilling or have an aversion to actually
taking a fight. This is not a criticism, but
there are so many other sports that may be more suitable for
them----that doesn't offer that type of challenge that is
presented when entering a boxing ring against another boxer.
We have Exclusive Matchup---boxers will say to me,
please be on the lookout for a fight for me, and inevitably when
I contact them because a promoter said they needed a female
boxer, they have more excuses for NOT taking a fight than TO
take a fight. Most famous line to date: “Keep me in mind for the
next fight card.”
We have the warriors in the sport---but we do not have enough of
them. Those few warriors cannot carry this sport. All of the
women who are professionals have an opportunity to build this
sport for not only themselves but for the women who are
currently also boxing, and for their sisters who are amateurs
and will be entering the sport as a pro.
I personally hope that in the year 2009, that we
have more women boxers willing to take on tougher opponents for
world title fights or other minor title fights, and that they
are willing to take fights where the competition is even, and
that boxing fans do not have to know the results before the
fight takes place.
I also hope that more of the pro
women boxers will stop the “so many old” excuses for not
fighting, when it is unfortunately obvious that some of them are
looking for easy and soft opponents to build a fairy tale boxing
record.
