(DEC 3) I was told “Good people don’t
need contracts.” I would like to thank Amaya & Vanrell
Productions and the people of the beautiful country of Uruguay for
their exceptional hospitality. In the moments leading up to the
official press conference my team was briefed on the president’s “
KO to Drugs” program which has the full support of the government
which centers around boxing where Chris is it’s star.
At the official press conference
(held at what is equivalent to the White House in the US) we were
joined by stars such as Roberto Duran, five-time world champion in
multiple weight divisions and Teofilo Stevenson three-time gold
medalist for the Olympics for Cuba.
When it was time for me to speak I
was very gracious understanding Chris’ position although I was not
impressed with her undefeated resume. Then when it came time for her
to speak she said she was going to knock me out which really took me
by surprise.
I tried to be diplomatic knowing that
her 7-0, opponent win loss record was 10-27 which is a 27% winning
percentage. At that moment in my head I made plans to knock her out.
When the press conference ended we traveled to a Iocal gym Chris’
headquarters. Did I mention there are over 100 gyms in the city of
Montevideo where we could have conducted a light workout?
Unknown to my team, her trainers were
in the gym with video recording devices to monitor the workout. The
next evening the promoters came to my hotel and told my team that
they had a big problem. Chris sprained her ankle.
Chris is as big as it comes in her country. The Uruguayans’
are very proud of her and look up to her to help their country
establish a true boxing champion. It is very admirable of Chris to
be carrying a whole country on her shoulders, but it was my plan to
knock her out and I felt she knew that.
I was told by the promoter,
“Good people don’t need contracts” although I do have a signed
contract of the rescheduling of this fight in January. I hope the
promoters keep their word.
I was grateful to the promoters for
finding me another opponent so that I would not have to leave
without fighting after training so hard and the long plane ride. We
will see if they are good people. More to Come.
