(JULY 13) Two Canadian featherweights
faced each other over four rounds Saturday night at the Silver Reef
Casino and Resort in Ferndale, Washington. Wendy Roy (0-4) fought
for the first time in the United States, facing Sarah Pucek (1-0)
who made her pro debut in Tacoma a while back. Pucek worked her way
through the amateur ranks before turning pro; Roy had no amateur
career, choosing instead to throw herself in to the professional mix
two years ago.
Pucek in red trunks
In the first round Pucek stayed light
on her feet, moving in and out while throwing a stiff jab at Roy.
Roy stayed in front of her, looking to land punches to the body, but
Pucek was quick enough to step out of the way. Both women threw more
punches in the second round when the most telling damage came at the
end of a Pucek right hand when she bloodied Roy’s nose. Roy shook
off the punch, ignored the blood, and stepped back in to the fray.
In the third round the women did a bit more fighting inside. It was
also in the third round when Roy began to use her right hand to her
advantage. She was able to throw it over the top of Pucek’s left,
and in so doing she tagged the quicker Pucek’s chin and jaw a few
times. While the third round was a better round for Roy, she was
well behind on the scorecards. In the fourth round she fought much
more aggressively. She tried to walk Pucek down and pin her on the
ropes. That meant, however, that she was in front of Pucek, and that
played to Pucek’s strengths, her reach and her quickness.
At the end of four rounds two judges scored the fight 39-37, the
third had it 40-36, all in favor of the quicker, and technically
more proficient, Sarah Pucek. While Wendy Roy continues to look for
her first win, it should be noted that her five opponents have a
combined five losses in twenty five fights.
