(JUNE 23) WBAN received an open letter
from Marcus Kawal, in regards to the Wendy Rodriguez vs. Hollie
Dunaway bout, that took place on June 13, 2008, on the PPV event, in
Albuquerque, New Mexico. [WBAN

Kowal said the following in the open letter:
To Whomever Wants to Read It;
It’s unfortunate to find it is necessary to write this letter. After
such a beautifully organized event that was a tremendous success for
women’s boxing, bias commentating has left some question marks
around the fight between Wendy Rodriguez and Holly Dunaway.
The team was shocked to hear from people (who were watching the
fight Pay Per View) that they had been watching one thing and
hearing another from the commentators; that the commentators had
Dunaway up by 7-8 rounds.
Let’s be honest here: Working someone’s corner or having a favorite
will always make you bias. Thus, it wasn’t strange perhaps that I
felt that Wendy had every single round – that it was a shut-out.
I went back and watched the fight again (twice), once being
“neutral” and once being “bias” for Dunaway. There’s absolutely no
way you can give Dunaway more than – and this is the very most – 4
rounds (a couple of them that you can argue either way). In fact, I
still felt that Wendy won the fight clearly. However, listening to
Al Bernstein, one would think it was a walk through the park for
Dunaway. I think the crowd said it the best after the fight: you
didn’t hear a single boo after the announcements, which is so often
the case after a split decision.
The purpose of this letter is two-fold: Firstly, it is to complain
about Al Bernstein’s commentating. A commentator is supposed to do
exactly that; commentate, in a neutral fashion. Bernstein, please
note the word neutral. Watching the fight, I felt like I was
watching a Rock-concert where Dunaway was the Rock star and Al
Bernstein was her biggest groupie. I have heard a lot of biased
commentating but this was by far the worst – it was ridiculous. Not
taking anything away from Holly Dunaway, she’s a great fighter and
champion but Al Bernstein needs to either: a) buy a pair of glasses
b) look for another job – I hear the local circus is looking for a
clown….c) propose.
Secondly, I want to reiterate that I have all the respect for you,
Holly, but you lost this fight. However, you were willing to give
Wendy a re-match and we’re willing to do the same for you – anytime.
Here’s a little tip to your manager though: focus on managing and
your fighter’s training instead of running your mouth about
knock-outs or your fighter might just end up looking up at someone
who is 2 inches shorter than herself…
