(MAY 16) WBC "Female Fighter of the
Year" and current stawweight champion, Carina "La Reina" Moreno
(17-1, 5 KO's) will be the youngest athlete to ever be inducted into
the Watsonville High School Hall of Fame. For most athletes, it
takes decades to be recognized in this realm.
Moreno, a graduate of
the class of 2000, did it in 8 years. Carina joins three other
athletes who will be inducted, all of whom were students back in the
1960's who did their part as community role models.
The inductees will be honored at two public events on May 16. The
Hall of Fame Assembly will be 10:45 a.m. at the Henry J. Mello
Center for the Performing Arts at Watsonville High School. The
Evening for the Black and Gold, featuring a ham buffet dinner, will
be at 6 p.m. at the Corralitos Community Center. Tickets are $25.
For information, call 728-6390, ext. 224, or 728-6390, ext. 1801.
Carina Moreno is scheduled to fight WIBA flyweight champion Eileen
Olszewski (5-0-1) live from the Isleta Resort Casino in Albuquerque
NM June 13, 2008 on the "Finally" PPV card featuring #1 female
welterweight in the world Holly Holm and #1 female middleweight in
the world, Mary Jo Sanders. On the line will be the vacant IFBA
International Female Boxing Association light flyweight title.
"Finally" will be available for live viewing on cable and satellite
pay-per-view in the United States via iN Demand, TVN and DirecTV and
in Canada, via Shaw Communications and StarChoice, for a suggested
retail price of only $24.95.
