The North American Boxing Federation
announced today that the ten round bout between Melissa Hernandez
and Brooke Dierdorff for the vacant NABF featherweight title,
scheduled for Friday in Doraville, GA, has been postponed.
Jill Diamond, Chairwoman of the NABF, said in a statement, "The NABF
deeply regrets that due to a medical issue with Melissa Hernandez,
that the NABF cannot and will not discuss in any public detail, it
was necessary to postpone the featherweight title bout to a future
date.
It is, I know, a major disappointment to the many fans of the
sport of Women's boxing in and around the Atlanta area who had
expressed great interest in the fight and the matchup of two of the
most exciting young female fighters in the featherweight division.
It was also the first NABF featherweight title defense in over a
year and a half. Plans have currently commenced to re-stage this
marquee bout at the earliest date and location. The NABF looks
forward to crowning a featherweight title holder who will prove to
be both a worthy and active champion."
The Hernandez/Dierdorff matchup came about when the former champion,
Jeri Sitzes, was vacated of the title by the NABF. Sitzes is
reportedly scheduled to fight a six round bout with Ada Velez on
August 10 in Springfield, MO. "We're happy that Jeri was able to
return to the ring so quickly and wish her the best in her future
endeavors in the ring," Diamond stated.
