Former two-time 125 lb. National JO
Champion, Adelaida ¨Cobra¨ Ruiz won a bronze medal on June 5th at
the 2007 US National Championships losing to Cristina Cruz of New
York by a score of 12-11.
Cruz controlled most of the bout with
hit and run tactics that kept her well ahead going into the third
round. Ruiz knowing she was behind staged a ferocious comeback in
the fourth round dominating the round, and forcing the referee to
issue a warning which added two points to Ruiz´s final score.
However, Cruz was able to earn the edge from her earlier lead. Ruiz,
now 32-3, suffered her first loss since 2002 when she lost a 2-1
decision to Vanessa Juarez and after a string of 25 consecutive
victories. Team Ruiz states they ¨are proud of her accomplishments¨
considering that she was coming off a 1 1/2 year medical layoff.
Team Ruiz also wish ¨best of luck to
Cruz¨as she heads into the finals against Teresa O´Toole. Cruz
deserves credit for having defeated two former National Jo Champions
during the tournament; Ruiz and Cynthia Moreno of Arizona. Ruiz will
next be competing at the 2007 National PAL in Oxnard, and may move
back to her natural weight class of 125 lbs.
