In a special
ceremony in the city centre at 1 pm on Saturday 9th
June, three of Ciudad Nezahualcóyotl's outstanding sportsmen,
WBC champions Humberto "Chiquita" González, José Luis Bueno and
Ana María Torres, will be honoured by the city's Primer
Síndico, Juan Manuel Zepeda Hernández. The ceremony will be
preceded by 11 amateur bouts.
Torres - La
Guerrera de Neza ("The Warrior of Neza") as she is known -
won the interim super flyweight title on the Mar de Campeones
bill in Xalapa on the 7th October 2006 . Fears
that her opponent on that occasion, Mayela ("the Little Cobra")
Pérez of Saltillo, might quit the sport after being taken to the
woodshed by Torres in the sixth round, turned out to be
over-alarmist. Pérez, a swift and elusive fighter who had
angered Torres before the fight with what were felt to be
disparaging remarks, refused to quit when she was trapped in the
corner, and though the referee respected her wishes for as long
as was reasonably possible, he was forced to intervene 10
seconds from the end of the round as she was out on her feet.
La Cobrita has since taken the advice of the promoter and
dropped down to junior flyweight, where she will be challenging
the champion, Anabel ("The Wasp") Ortiz, in what should be a
real thriller in Tepic on the 15th June.
Meanwhile
Torres, who is currently preparing her second defence of the
title, against Marylin “Cachorrita” Hernández of the Dominican
Republic in Toluca on the 27th July, is insisting there be at
least three other fights between women on the bill.
