Driven by the magnetism of
Venezuelan imports like Ámbar Fajardo (photo), Carolina Álvarez
and Ogleidis "La Niña" Suárez – not to mention local talent like
Chantal Martínez and Juseth “La Barbie” Araúz – women's boxing
is gathering pace in Panama, with at least one and sometimes
three or more bouts on every card. New promoters are entering
the market too. Last Saturday, it was the turn of Sunshine Box
Promotions, which kicked off its first ever event, in the
gymnasium of the Club de Loneones del Marañón, Panama
City, with an amateur bout between two juveniles – followed,
since the fight between Carmen Saint Young and Lisbeth Gallardo
had had to be cancelled, by what was billed as an "exhibition
match" between these amateurs.
