Mexico: The chutzpah of Marilyn “Cachorrita” Hernández, who
climbed into the ring after the recent Torres v Santana fight in
Santo Domingo to call out the WBC champion, has been rewarded:
Torres has agreed to give the girl from the Dominican Republic a
crack at the title. The venue will be Toluca (Mexico) and the date
the 27th July. "Ana is a great champion," says Hernández, who
performed creditably in her two previous world title attempts
(against Halmich and Graf in Germany), "but I can beat her."
France: The date of the return match between
Anne Sophie Mathis and Myriam Lamare for the WBA super
lightweight title has been brought forward (one day) to Friday the
29th June. The venue will be Marseille: the challenger(Lamare)'s
home town.
Germany: SES's latest signing, super welterweight Svetlana
Kuhl, and her new co-trainer, Dirk Dzemski, got their partnership
off to a winning start in Oranienburg last weekend when all three
judges preferred her performance to that of Berlin's Malina Perplies.
According to SES, Svetlana gave her more experienced opponent 'no
real chance', displaying excellent technique throughout and applying
constant pressure.
Mexico: It was announced today that Zulina "La Loba" Muñoz
and Ana Arrazola will be appearing on a bill in Tlane on the 15th
June. Their opponents have not yet been named. It is said also that
a further fight is being lined up for Zulina in July.
Uruguay: It is still unclear whether Christian Namús's
opponent on the La noche del futuro bill in the Palacio Peñarol in
Montevideo on Friday will be María Eugenia López or Guillermina
Fernández. The note dated the 13h May (and naming the former)
appears above the one dated the 14th May (naming the latter) on the
Boxeo Uruguayo site. It would seem easier to mistype the date than
reverse the order of the announcements on the page, which leads one
to suppose that it will be López, but all will be revealed
(metaphorically, you understand) at today's weigh-in.
Mexico: The boxing commission of the Federal District has
published its rankings in three weight categories:-
Junior flyweight (Champion: Anabel "Avispa" Ruiz. Contenders:
Elizabeth "La Chiquita" Sánchez, Rocío Vázquez, Delia Lopez, Gloria
Ríos, Mayela Pérez, Adriana Chamoza, Andrea Benítez, Blanca Pérez,
Anabel Ortiz and Ana Arrazola); Bantamweight (Champion: Susana
Vázquezl. Contenders: Jazmín "Rusita" Rivas, Esmeralda Moreno,
Martha Arévalo and Mariana Juárez); Super bantamweight (Title
vacant. Contenders: Jackie Nava, Lina Ramírez, Vianey Casas, Silvia
Zúñiga, Ofelia Domínguez and Ivonne Muñoz).
Nicaragua:
Paulina "Paquita"
Cardona of Colombia had hoped to avenge her only defeat (at the
hands of Carolina "La Fiera" Álvarez of Venezuela last year in
Chiriquí, Panama) at the KO Drugs
event in Managua last weekend. Instead she suffered a further
reverse, losing 78-74 on all three scorecards. With the defeat,
Cardona falls to 7-2-2 (2 KOs), whilst Álvarez -- who is still angry
at the way her WBA title fight with Susianna Kentikian was stopped
(as a result of a misunderstanding, according to WBA Vice-President
Gilberto Jesús Mendoza) just as the Armenian appeared to be gassing
-- improves to 9-1-1 (4 KOs). "Perhaps it wasn't the right moment,"
admitted Medardo Villalobos, the Panamanian judge, speaking of the
Kentikian stoppage, "but, if the referee hadn't stopped the fight
and there had been a knockout, worse may have happened. It was done
for her own protection." "You have to remember, this is women's
boxing," added the Spanish judge, José Ignacio Martínez. "Perhaps if
it had been a male title fight, things would have been different and
it would have been allowed to continue."
Germany: Natascha
Ragosina will be risking all three of her middleweight world
championship belts (those of the WBA, WIBF and GBU) next
Friday in Cologne – always assuming a willing opponent can
be found. The fight will be televised live by
Pro Sieben (25th May at 22:00 CET). Last time
out, Ragosina was more impressive at the weigh-in, when she
responded to a shove from her challenger with the kind of
imperious slap the wives of French prime ministers reserve
for journalists who flirt with their husbands, than during
the fight itself, in which she seemed overly cautious. There
was also something about the manner in which she used her
right hand on that occasion that suggested she was either
still suffering from, or fearing a recurrence of, an injury.
Whatever the problem, time (or her trainer) should have
sorted it out by next Friday. On the same bill, Nadia Hockmi
will be challenging for the WBA flyweight belt held by
Susianna Kentikian, who seems to have stolen Dutch Muay Thai
star Ilonka Elmont's
moniker, "Killer Queen". Ilonka, it appears, hasn't noticed
yet. (I won't tell her if you don't.)
