PITTSBURGH – (MAY 13) – Well, let me see
how Post Gazette writer Chuck Finder chose to state what happen on
last Friday's card, during the fight between Leslee ‘Long Play’
Perella and Ella ‘Bam Bam’ Nuñez.
As Mr. Finder briefly put it, “Leslee Perella of Brookline ran
headfirst into buzz saw Bam Bam Nunez of New York, who bloodied the
veteran female fighter’s nose badly in the first round and kept
pounding for a unanimous decision”.
Essentially, Mr. Finder is correct in what he said; but, rather than
a ‘buzz saw’, it was more like a ‘hurricane’ that Perella ran into,
when Ella ‘Bam Bam’ Nuñez broke Perella’s nose early in round one
and was relentless in her pursuit of Perella, earning her a 4-round
unanimous decision victory over the hometown crowd pleaser. To
Perella’s credit, she took heart and courageously went the distance,
as she valiantly tried to come up with a counter to the onslaught
that she sustained at the hands of Nuñez, a replacement opponent for
Ebony Clement-Bay, who Perella was originally to fight on this card,
but could not, since Clement-Bay was knocked out in her most recent
match, less than 30 days ago.
In elation with her victory, Nuñez dropped to the canvas and did
some speed push-ups for the crowd.
With the loss, Perella’s record goes to 4-2-1, while Nuñez advances
to 2-2-0.
After the fight, I had the pleasure in meeting the very personable
Ella Nuñez, who kindly advised me to speak to her trainer, Armando,
due to her limited command of the English language; but, prior to
speaking with him, Nuñez graciously posed for a few pictures.
As her coach, Armando, says, he gave Nuñez the moniker of ‘Bam Bam’
because of how hard and how fast her punches are, when they land, as
this writer can surely attest.
It also turns out that Nuñez really is a ‘veteran female fighter’ in
her own right, having been in training in the ‘sweet science’ since
she was ten years old, but not having much of an amateur background.
Her record of 2-2 is deceiving, being that she has been victimized
by a couple ‘hometown’ decisions, which are all too common these
days. With that said, Nuñez knows in her heart she is really
undefeated in four fights, and is being ducked or avoided by other
fighters and their trainers. When asked if he feels that Nuñez is
ready to fight some Florida fighters like Stacy Reille, Armando
said, “They don’t want to fight her. When they saw how soundly Ella
beat her last opponent, they said they weren’t interested”.
Now that she is a 39-year old single mother of four children, with
her oldest being only 14, Nuñez definitely keeps busy outside of the
ring as well inside of the ring.
Congratulations to Ella ‘Bam Bam’ Nuñez on her ‘4th’ victory and to
Leslee ‘Long Play’ Perella, for having taken the chance on fighting
Nuñez, in lieu of ducking her, as well as having the heart to go the
distance with Nuñez, when she could have easily chosen to stay on
her stool after round one.
