Ana "La Bronca"
Arrazola's eight-fight unbeaten run in the professional ranks
was terminated and her hopes of landing the NABF title "before
the year is out" all but extinguished in the Rouge discotheque
in Metepec on Saturday evening when she foundered a second time
on the same rock: Ibeth "La Roca" Zamora Silva, who had beaten
her in the amateurs but was fighting here as a professional for
only the second time.
With the win,
the youngster from San Cristóbal Huichochitlán – whose name
(spelled variously "Iveth", "Ibeth" and "Ivet") is perhaps a
Latin variant of the French "Yvette" – advances to 2 and 0,
whilst Arrazola, who had a KO, three TKOs and two decisions
sandwiched between draws with the much-fancied Mayela Pérez and
Jessica Chávez going into the fight, falls to 6-1-2.
Matriarch in
her mid twenties of a boxing-mad family – a "tribe of warriors",
as one interviewer put it – with an 11-year-old son, Juan Carlos
("Bronquito") Contreras, twenty-five wins into an amateur
career, two young daughters, Ana Selena and Diana Alejandra, at
ringside, and a husband, Juan Carlos ("El Bronco") Contreras
Garfias, himself an ex-boxer, working her corner, "La Bronca"
had been brimming with confidence going into the fight: Whilst
Zamora – who must have thought she was fighting the whole
declension (Bronco, Bronca, Bronquito…) – had been far
more circumspect, insisting that every opponent deserved
respect, Arrazola was in "no doubt", she told Abraham Hernández
Villanueva of El Sol de Toluca, that she would triumph,
the only question being whether she would decision her young
opponent or knock her out.
Spurned by
all three judges in Metepec, she'll have woken up under the
weather on Sunday – what with the cold shower Ibeth had given
her the night before.
To hazard a
diagnosis without examining the patient is, of course, never
wise; but "Bronchitis" leaps to mind.
